Demon Slayer is Having a Major Gaming Moment

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, or Demon Slayer for short, has only been around for 8 years, but it’s quickly climbed up the ranks to become one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time. Although the franchise was initially conceived as a shonen manga series, it has since expanded into many other mediums, including anime, stage plays, films, and, of course, video games. The Demon Slayer manga, which ran from 2016 to 2020, has sold at least 150 million copies worldwide, while its TV show adaptation has become the most-watched anime of 2024, garnering more than 15 million viewers in Japan alone.

2024 has been a particularly eventful year for Demon Slayer fans. The long-awaited fourth season of Demon Slayer‘s anime, which adapted the 15th and 16th volumes of the manga, aired over the summer and was met with mostly positive reviews. Meanwhile, the compilation film Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashiro Training was released in theaters earlier this year. Demon Slayer-themed attractions were even opened at Universal Studios Japan and Araneta City in mid-2024. On top of all that, the franchise has been active in the world of gaming, as well, in terms of both new game releases and announcements.

A Mario Party-Style Demon Slayer Game Was Released This Year

Back in April 2024, Cyberconnect2 and Sega released a digital tabletop game called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Sweep the Board for the Nintendo Switch. The game, for those who are unaware, is very similar to Mario Party concept-wise. In it, players move characters around grid-based boards and partake in various minigames with up to four friends. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Sweep the Board features 14 playable characters and 6 stages inspired by the hit anime. In addition, it can be played both online and offline.

Despite launching as a Switch exclusive, Sweep the Board was ported to PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC on July 26. The fact that Sega decided to bring the game to all last- and current-gen platforms is worth commending. Even if Sweep the Board may not be as fleshed out as, say, Super Mario Party Jamboree, it is still a solid party game to play with friends, and a great alternative to Mario Party for those who don’t have a Switch.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles 2 is in the Works, and It’s Launching in 2025

Although Sweep the Board was released only a few months ago, Sega and Cyberconnect 2 have already announced their next Demon Slayer video game. Earlier this week, the two companies confirmed that they were working on a sequel to the 2021 fighting action game Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles. According to Sega, this follow-up to the hit 3D fighter is going to have new playable characters and a brand-new story mode that adapts the last three arcs of the Demon Slayer anime. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2 is scheduled to release on all modern consoles sometime in 2025.

Demon Slayer May Be Coming to Fortnite Very Soon

Hinokami Chronicles 2 may not be the only Demon Slayer-related video game content to look forward to next year because, if rumors are true, Fortnite may be collaborating with the series in the near future. The reputable insider Shiina alleged in a tweet last month that a Demon Slayer and Fortnite crossover was “coming soon,” though they stopped short of providing an exact release date. While it’s best to approach this report with caution, the notion of Demon Slayer popping up in Epic Games’ battle royale doesn’t seem too absurd, especially considering the game’s latest season, subtitled HUNTERS, is themed entirely around Japanese culture. Therefore, Fortnite collaborating with anime franchises like this one makes perfect sense.
