If you love Dead Cells as much as I do, you need to give Windblown a shot. The newest roguelike from the former’s developer Motion Twin, it’s already an incredibly promising evolution of what the team can do. With an isometric viewpoint and co-op, Motion Twin is clearly pushing itself with new ideas, but that does mean that the Steam Early Access launch needs some improvements. Well, the game’s first feature patch is here, and it makes some much-needed changes while adding some new content for good measure.

The biggest part of Motion Twin’s new Windblown update is by far the change to the Sudden Death mechanic. Previously, if you were playing with friends in co-op and one of them died, you’d need to kill ten enemies without getting hit once. Worst of all, this still counts even if you were fighting a boss. That’s now changed in the roguelike game, however, as Motion Twin has revamped Sudden Death into Revenge Mode. Now, when an ally dies you deal increased damage and move quicker, but your enemies hit harder too. You also can’t use healing flasks when in this enraged state.

That’s not all that Motion Twin has added in Windblown’s The Revenge Update, though. You can use two new weapons in the Fiery Claws and Umbrella. The Claws are quick at dealing damage, while the Umbrella lets you wield the wind and control mini-tornadoes. There are also four new trinkets, and an extra four skins for completing runs on increasingly tougher difficulties.

The boss at the end of Rat Village has also been reworked, so they should now be much more punishing with a handful of new moves to use on you. Motion Twin has even “added a bunch of new enemy variants to most biomes,” so runs should be more challenging overall.

You can finally pause the game in single-player, too, so you don’t need to worry about missing the last enemy of an encounter and having them kill you when you go to the bathroom. There are also some mouse aiming and performance enhancements, which should make the general experience play a lot better.

As for what’s next, here’s what Motion Twin has to say: “We have big plans for Windblown, and the work has only just begun! We’ll be taking a small break over the next couple of weeks as we recharge from what has been total chaos! But rest assured, we’ll be back in early 2025 with a continued sense of determination for Windblown!”
