Why A Sequel Could Bring A Threat Greater Than Sukuna

This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

Key Takeaways

  • Ryomen Sukuna is JJK’s strongest villain, dominating in the Shinjuku Showdown.
  • To maintain viewer excitement, JJK’s sequel needs a threat greater than Sukuna.
  • The next JJK villain could arise from a mysterious era with stronger power than Sukuna.

Jujutsu Kaisen wrapped up earlier this year, and it is safe to say that fans have thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. Even though the Shinjuku Showdown Arc of the series was rather rushed and the outcome of various plot points was not to the liking of the fans, overall, it was an experience that fans could not forget. Now that JJK has wrapped up, fans know that further content from this franchise is going to be very limited. In fact, it is entirely possible that JJK, as a story, has concluded here permanently.

JJK ended earlier this year. The series still has potential and needs a spin-off.

But, some fans are also holding out for potential one-shots or a mini-series to drop at some point later down the line. Of course, it cannot be denied that the possibility of a sequel series exists. If JJK does ever end up getting a sequel, then, fans need to keep in mind that the story is highly likely going to see the introduction of a threat even greater than the King of Curses, Rykmen Sukuna.

Sukuna’s Power In JJK

  • Ryomen Sukuna Is JJK’s Strongest Villain
  • Sukuna Put On A Show in JJK’s Shinjuku Showdown

Sukuna was the greatest power in JJK. Fans knew him to be the King of Curses and the strongest sorcerer in history. In fact, in the entire series, only one sorcerer was close to Sukuna in terms of strength, and that was Gojo, his modern equivalent. Sukuna’s strength was such that he completely dominated the Heian era and the sorcerers that existed at the time used him to sharpen their own skills in battle. By virtue of being turned into a cursed object, Sukuna was reincarnated into the modern era as well. Fans saw the full extent of Sukuna’s power in the Shinjuku Showdown and got to witness an incredibly exciting battle where both of these individuals went all out. Although they were largely equally matched, Sukuna was able to pull one over Gojo and win. From this point on, fans were treated to a raid being led against Sukuna, and surely, it was one of the most exciting parts of the entire series.

Farewell, Gojo Satoru! I shall never forget you for as long as I live! – Sukuna

Fan saw the King of Curses confronted by a multitude of sorcerers, and he was overwhelmingly dominant against the vast majority of them, which just goes to show how great his strength truly was. In the end, it took the collaborative effort of just about every major sorcerer in JJK to put an end to him and he eventually fell in the battle against Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of the series. Unfortunately, Sukuna crumbled in battle, and due to him not having an actual body, his chances of returning in the future are very slim. Regardless of whether Sukuna is going to be there or not, fans know that he cannot play the role of a villain in the future because his story arc, at least as a villain, is completely over. This is precisely why if JJK ever gets a sequel, be it in the form of a movie, a one-shot series, or a mini-series composed of a bunch of chapters, fans know that a different villain needs to emerge.

Why JJK’s Sequel Needs A Stronger Enemy

To Threaten Yuji and Co, A Powerful Enemy Needs To Emerge

Naturally, the very first question that fans would have in regards to an enemy with strength greater than Sukuna is why the story even needs them. The answer to this question is simple. If JJK’s sequel is set immediately following the events of the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, then it is possible that the enemy is weaker than Sukuna. After all, the vast majority of the sorcerers have not hit their full potential yet and are still unfinished products. They would need to combine their strength to win against such an enemy and even if they didn’t, lower-strength villains would mean that they would be able to handle the threat well and the stakes in the fight would be very high, leading to a very exciting battle.

Does that mean he has potential equal to Master Sukuna? – Uraume

However, this would lower the excitement, because it simply wouldn’t live up to what the Shinjuku showdown Arc had to offer. In order to excite the fans greatly, something even bigger needs to happen in JJK, which is where the emergence of a villain greater than Sukuna comes into play. This isn’t the only reason why JJK needs a villain even stronger than Sukuna.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Important Role Of The Gojo Clan In A Sequel

JJK has ended not too long ago. The Gojo clan could play a major role in a sequel.

As fans know, the vast majority of the main cast of JJK possesses tremendous potential. Yuji himself can be equal to Sukuna in the future. Megumi has the power to rival Yuji and reach a similar level to Gojo. Similarly, Yuta is known to be the next Gojo. Nobara, although limited in terms of strength, can also climb up the ladder very high. All things considered, JJK’s cast is very powerful and if a sequel is set after these students graduate, then, their power level will be too high for any Sukuna-level threat to be able to cause any harm. If all of them end up combining their strength against even the likes of Sukuna, especially after hitting their full potential, they would be able to win the battle without much trouble. This is why JJK’s next villain needs to be even stronger than Sukuna, because otherwise, there is not going to be any kind of challenge posed by them at all and the intensity will be very low.

Who Could Be The Next JJK Villain?

The Next Villain Could Appear From An Old Era

Of course, then, the question of who the next villain of JJK is going to be arises. The truth is that there is absolutely no sorcerer stronger than Sukuna in JJK that the fans know of. However, it is possible the history of JJK that is obscure and predates even the Heian era could bring back someone who is even stronger which the fans don’t know about yet. This would require the author to establish a completely new plot point and introduce new lore into the JJK verse.

Largely speaking, this is only an idea to excite the fans and nothing else. But, if JJK ever gets a sequel where the main cast is at their full potential, which is something that fans would prefer, then, a threat even greater needs to follow. It is also possible that the plan Kenjaku had in regards to the merger ends up happening and the next job for the sorcerers would be to counter that.

That would, in a way, form a threat even greater than Sukuna, and excite the fans to no end. For now, JJK, as a series, does not have any plans of continuation, but, due to the immense popularity, fans hope that the author will give them bits here and there and make sure that the series continues in some way for many years to come.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
