The Witcher 4 May Not Involve Geralt After All

The Witcher 4 May Not Involve Geralt After All

Key Takeaways

  • Geralt actor Doug Cockle has explained that he doesn’t actually know whether the character will be in The Witcher 4.
  • Earlier this year, Cockle claimed that Geralt would play “a part” in the sequel, but has now claimed he “doesn’t actually know” whether he’ll feature.
  • Cockle says that he “went off a rumor” at the time, and that The Witcher 4 is actually “a complete mystery” to him.

The Witcher 4 is well in production right now, but we still don’t know much about it. CD Projekt Red has teased that it’s going to be bigger and better than The Witcher 3, and that it will launch roughly two years after its finally unveiled, but that’s about it, with almost nothing teased about a potential story or who the game will focus on.

Our only proper clue came from Geralt actor Doug Cockle, who claimed back in August this year that Geralt would play “a part” in The Witcher 4. It was the first time we got any kind of tease about the story, but even that has now been thrown into question, as Cockle recently walked back his comments during an interview with Geektown at MCM Comic Con Birmingham (thanks GamesRadar).

When asked what his thoughts were on Geralt not being the main protagonist of the series any more, Cockle brings up the comments he made earlier this year about his potential involvement in The Witcher 4. He claims that after he made those comments he was “slapped by CD Projekt” because he didn’t know “how true it is,” and that he “went off a rumor.”

“I went off a rumor – I thought I’d seen somebody from CD Projekt say that Geralt will be in Witcher 4, but he won’t be the main character, and I don’t actually know if that’s true now, because they came back and they went, ‘We haven’t put anything out there, don’t say anything!'”

Cockle then admits that he thought he “had an idea” of what Geralt’s role would be based off this rumor, but that he was quickly told that he shouldn’t have any ideas at all, as CD Projekt Red has never let slip. He then claims that he probably heard the rumor from a “really old statement” that someone that no longer works at CD Projekt Red made a while back, and that the current devs have no plans to let the cat out of the bag just yet.

Of course, this doesn’t actually rule out a potential return for Geralt in some capacity, just that Cockle has no idea whether it’s going to happen or not. It sounds like none of us will know until CD Projekt Red is ready to tell us, so we’ll just have to remain patient and get our Geralt fix from Andrej Sapkowski’s new book. There are worse ways to pass the time.
