The Case for and Against Role Queue

The Case for and Against Role Queue

Finally, after months of anticipation, players are now fighting their way through the brand-new Marvel Rivals. This game has taken numerous iconic Marvel heroes, tossed them onto a 6v6 battlefield, and forced them to fight for glory. It has blended the Marvel Comics universe with the hero shooter genre for an experience that fans will not soon forget. But, even though it seems to be a success, some players are desperately looking for Marvel Rivals to adopt a role queue.

At launch, Marvel Rivals has deviated from other multiplayer games by not including a role queue system. Instead, players are able to select whoever they want in both Quick Match and Competitive modes. As of now, there does not seem to be any indication that NetEase Games will be changing that approach. However, many members of the community have been calling for it to help balance out the teams. And while that addition would likely help team composition considerably, it may also limit the game’s unique factor in the long run.

Marvel Rivals’ Adding Role Queue is a Double-Edged Sword

The Absence of a Role Queue Changes the Game Considerably

One of the best parts of the absence of a role queue in Marvel Rivals is that queue times are extremely low. Of course, this is also likely because the game has just launched, and thousands of players are trying to play it at the same time. But those same players are also not being forced to sit for long periods of time just to play certain roles. Vanguards and Strategists may not have much trouble finding games, but Duelists may be forced to wait a long time since that has proven to be the fan-favorite class for many,

Along with that, the lack of a role queue also means that Marvel Rivals players have far more flexibility to be who they want to be in the game. They are no longer forced to stick with heroes in a certain role simply because they queued for it. Instead, they are able to shake up the team on a whim, adopting new strategies and team compositions as the match goes on. While it does not always pan out well, it does at least make matches a bit more exciting, as players never know what type of team they are going to get or go up against.

Role Queue Could Help Balance Marvel Rivals’ Matches

On the other hand, a role queue could help alleviate one of the community’s biggest concerns right now. Some of the community have been calling for its addition because players refuse to play as Vanguards or Strategists, and instead, many are choosing to be Duelists. Not only is that likely because that role has the most hero options, but also because they are Marvel Rivals‘ version of DPS, which is often a fan-favorite, no matter the multiplayer game.

Adding a role queue to the game would force teams to have two Vanguards, two Duelists, and two Strategists. Players would have to queue for said role and be locked into it for the duration of the game. The hope is that this would help balance the teams and put players who play these roles in their respective queues. That way, they can stand on equal footing, and games would not be dominated by Duelists.

As of now, NetEase Games has not said if it is considering adding a role queue. Instead, players may just have to work together to build the best team possible. But there is always the chance that changes sometime down the road, as it did with Overwatch. So, players will just have to wait and see.
