Key Takeaways
- People have been claiming Breloom’s Sitting Cuties plush has sold out due to the arrest of Luigi Mangione.
- The murder suspect has an image of Breloom in his Twitter banner along with a selfie and a neck x-ray.
- The plush has actually been sold out for a while but would have likely sold well this week if it were in stock.
Your social media timelines have likely been filled with the name and likeness of someone who you will have almost certainly never heard of before yesterday – Luigi Mangione. Mangione has been arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and as people clamor to learn more about the suspect, part of the spotlight has fallen on Breloom, a rather unremarkable Pokemon.
No offense intended to Breloom nor those of you who are fans of the Gen 3 Pokemon. The dual Grass/Fighting-type just isn’t at the forefront of the Pokemon zeitgeist all that often, if ever, and is suddenly being seen more than any other Pokemon in the world, possibly even edging out Pikachu during the last 24 hours.
Some have noted that Breloom’s Pokedex number is 286, noting that proverb 28:6 reads, “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.”
That’s because, upon discovering Mangione’s Twitter account, people noted the rather odd combination of photos in the murder suspect’s banner. A topless photo of himself, an x-ray of someone’s neck, and Breloom. One of the first reactions for many upon discovering Mangione might be a fan of Breloom was to head to the Pokemon Center to pick up some Breloom merch. However, there’s just one Breloom product on the Pokemon Center’s website, backing up my point about it not being a Pokemon that tends to get that much attention.
People Have Claimed Breloom’s Plush Is Sold Out Thanks To Luigi Mangione
In Reality, The Sitting Cutie Has Been Unavailable For At Least A Year
Breloom’s Sitting Cuties plush is the only merch it has at the Pokemon Center, and unfortunately, it has sold out. That has triggered a wave of reactions from those who likely don’t frequent the Pokemon Center to yell from the virtual rooftops that Mangione’s arrest has prompted so many people to buy Breloom’s plush that it sold out within hours of his arrest.
That’s not what has happened here. While I’m sure some people sought out Breloom merch upon seeing the Pokemon in Mangione’s Twitter banner, even the first person who had that thought cross their minds would have been met with a sold out banner. Sitting Cuties collectors have been quick to point out that there hasn’t been a sudden rush to buy Breloom’s plush since it has been out of stock for at least the past year.
Whether Mangione is convicted of murder or not, Breloom getting wrapped up in this ordeal will add to what has been a busier few months than you’d expect for certain Pokemon’s having their legacies tarnished. A Game Freak leak that unearthed unused Pokemon lore has ensured no one will ever look at Typhlosion the same way again.
