Jeremy Allen White To Play This Obscure Star Wars Character In Upcoming Film

Key Takeaways

  • Jeremy Allen White will voice Rotta the Hutt in the film, rumored to have a significant role.
  • The Mandalorian & Grogu transitioned from a TV series to a movie due to production delays caused by strikes.
  • The film’s release in 2026 will mark the return of Star Wars movies in theaters.

Ever since the announcement that The Mandalorian & Grogu would be a movie instead of a continuation of Lucasfilm’sThe Mandalorian television series, updates about the project have been sparse. This week, fans finally got some news regarding casting.

The Mandalorian & Grogu did something massively impressive this year: filmed and made no noise about it. Many fans didn’t even know it had gone into production, and aside from some casting announcements very little is known about the film. It was originally intended to be season 4 of Disney+’s hit show The Mandalorian but when that was delayed by the 2023 Writers’ and SAG strikes, Lucasfilm and showrunner Jon Favreau restructured things and turned it into a movie. After the announcement was made in January of this year, some were confused by the choice. However, Favreau and Dave Filoni seem confident it was the right one. Their track record is pretty solid overall so far, so they may just be right.

With rumors about The Mandalorian and Grogu circulating, there is space for the bounty hunter to make waves in the gaming world.

This week, Variety confirmed that actor and star of The Bear Jeremy Allen White will have a role in the film alongside Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver. The news was met with surprise from fans, because rather than appearing on screen the only thing that will be present of White is his voice. He will be voicing the character Rotta the Hutt. While this name may not be familiar to some, fans of animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will recognize Rotta as the son of Jabba the Hutt. In the film that precedes the show, Rotta is kidnapped as a baby in a plot to force the Hutt species to join the Clone Wars. He was saved by then-Padawan Ahsoka Tano and her Master Anakin Skywalker.

The capacity to which Rotta will appear in the film is as yet unknown– although there are rumors it will not be a small part– as are most other details. For instance, whether or not Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka will be involved in the plot. This is interesting to consider, given her past connection to Rotta. There is also no information about who Weaver is playing, though she’s obviously no stranger to spending time in space. The only plot information available right now is basically just that the Mandalorian (AKA Din Djarin) and his adopted son Grogu will go on an adventure together.

It’s weird to think about, especially considering the amount of shows that have come out and continued since, but The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first Star Wars film released since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Several projects have been announced and canned between then and now, so it’s nice to have some solid proof that there will in fact be another Star Wars film on the big screen soon. Another notable (and eagerly awaited) project is Daisy Ridley’s return to Star Wars in the untitled Rey film. There have been some setbacks in the development process– including losing its writer– but it remains in the works. The Mandalorian & Grogu will hopefully do a good job of getting people excited to get back to their local theater to see new Star Wars movies again.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to release on May 26th, 2026.
