Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has launched to a great reception. It goes to show that even after all these years, there’s still love for Indy, and MachineGames captured it perfectly. Of course, the portrayal of Indy itself is very important, and Troy Baker delivered a great performance as the iconic treasure hunter.

The requirements are too high to be accessible to everyone.
However, it seems that Baker wasn’t the immediate first choice to play Indy. In fact, Bethesda boss Todd Howard didn’t want him to play the role at all. Baker revealed that Howard wasn’t too keen to cast him as Indy, and even rolled his eyes when his name came up, mostly because he’s in almost every major video game.
That’s A Big Hat To Fill
In a conversation with BBC, Baker revealed that he initially turned the role down, but the capture team at MachineGames convinced him to audition (thanks, GamesRadar+). However, when this was brought up to Todd Howard, he “rolled his eyes” at Baker’s name as he felt players would recognise his voice. “I never thought that my success would actually work against me,” said Baker.
He explained that he auditioned for the role with a number of other actors and made it to the final two. After that, Todd Howard picked his voice every time in the blind test.
However, Baker wasn’t too confident after landing the role either, and he kept thinking he was going to get fired from the part. It was only after Howard sent him an email saying “You’re doing a hell of a job,” that he was relieved. “I was like: ‘You have no idea how much I needed to hear that right now’,” explained Baker.
As for how good Baker was at depicting Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones, MachineGames Design Director Jens Andersson told us that he was indistinguishable from the voice samples they used of Ford. “We did ask for samples from a bunch of different people and the first time he listened to Troy’s stuff he was like “Okay this is good, this is the reference. Can I hear Troy now?” And that was Troy. After that it was kind of clear,” he revealed.
