Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was released back on the original PlayStation, which was when players needed to buy a separate peripheral in order to save games. This came in the form of memory cards. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered lets players manually save at any time, but they will not be exactly where they saved.
Players will need to find special rooms with gateways they can use to traverse vast distances, lest they be forced to repeat their arduous past treks to reach areas that were previously inaccessible. It is also worth noting there is a great deal of backtracking, so having a means to fast travel is highly recommended.

How to Fast Travel in Soul Reaver
Large open-world games often need a form of fast travel to prevent repeated lengthy travel times. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver will introduce you to the gates you will use for fast travel early on in the game. However, it gives absolutely no information on how to use them or that they will be your means of fast traveling, just a cryptic quote. Standing on the gate will allow players to activate it by pressing the attack button, and each location they have not added will be grayed out. Pressing the attack button again will cause the gate to deactivate.
These gates twist space, laying a path across great spans.
Players will not be able to use the first gate they find, but once they pass through a door with the same icon as this gate, they will be able to find another one of these gates. Interacting with it will add it to their collection. If players pass by one of these doors, they risk having to run all the way back to a location they previously visited.
Each time a player enters one of these rooms, they will see a symbol on the wall, and interacting with the gate will unlock the correlating symbol. It is important to remember these symbols, as there are no words for these gates. If players wish to pass through the gate, they must walk forward through the portal and into the room of the symbol they want.

How Many Gates Are There in Soul Reaver
There are a total of 14 gates, and while most of these will be at the start of each new location, some will be deep within these locations to prevent players from having to run through the entire area if they need to turn off the game. Each time the player enters the game, they will spawn back in the Underworld where the game began, making these gates very important, as it can take players half an hour just to get back to where they once were on foot.
