Charms are a new system in Path of Exile 2 that replaces the non-Life and non-Mana Potions players could equip in Path of Exile 1. Instead of granting unique bonuses and passive buffs on use like Potions in PoE, Charms in Path of Exile 2 activate when their associated trigger is procced – but you won’t be able to equip Charms immediately.

When you first start out in Path of Exile 2, Charm Slots can be seen on the equipment screen, but they will be blocked out. Once you do acquire your first Charm, and are able to unlock Charm Slots, Path of Exile 2 players can then upgrade Charms to increase their intrinsic bonuses with Modifiers and Rarity.
How To Equip Charms in Path of Exile 2
In Path of Exile 2, Charms can be equipped only once you have acquired a Belt. You should find your first Belt a few levels into Act 1, but if you get bad luck with drops, remember to talk to the equipment vendors in town every level. Vendor inventory updates every time you level up, offering new items.
If you don’t have any Belts available to purchase in the early levels, save your Gold, keep progressing, and keep checking vendors. You should be able to acquire a Belt by about Level 10.
Once you get a belt, equip it into your Belt slot in the equipment menu. Look beneath your belt in this menu to see a new equipment slot that has opened up: your first PoE 2 Charm slot.
To get more Charm slots in your belt, Path of Exile players must equip higher-tier belt armor. In Acts 1 and 2, most belts will come with one Charm slot. In Act 3, Cruel difficulty, and beyond, belts with more Charm slots become much more common.

When it comes to the question of how long it takes to beat Path of Exile 2, length ultimately depends on your skill, luck, and how far you want to go.
For one, you can add Modifiers to Rare and Magic Charms with Orbs of Augmentation and Exalted Orbs. For example, Charms won’t grant Stats or free Skill levels, but they can add Resistances, increase the effect of the Charm, and add modifiers akin to Potion modifiers that add max Charges and increase Charge recovery.
Another way to upgrade Charms Path of Exile 2 players can take advantage of is by upgrading their Rarity. Like most equipment, you can use Orb of Transmutation and Regal Orb Currencies to increase the Rarity of Charms from Normal to Magic and from Magic to Rare.
These upgrades add modifiers like the Orb of Augmentation and Exalted Orb, but be sure to only use a Regal Orb on a Magic Charm if it already has two modifiers. The Regal Orb only adds one more to a Magic item, so if you aren’t already at the Magic max of 2 modifiers, it will only have 2 modifiers as a Rare item.
