Christopher Landon’s Blumhouse Horror Movie Drop Could Be His Best Yet

Christopher Landon's Blumhouse Horror Movie Drop Could Be His Best Yet

Key Takeaways

  • “Drop” starring Brandon Sklenar and Meghann Fahy features a unique twist on the typical home invasion thriller.
  • With Christopher Landon’s new horror movie “Drop,” expect a blend of humor and scares that set it apart.
  • Landon’s track record of light-hearted yet scary films, like “Freaky,” creates high hopes for the upcoming “Drop.”

The horror genre is still going strong in 2024. After a couple of years of terrifying home invasion movies like Barbarian and slasher sequels like Scream 6, the past 12 months have brought the body horror hit The Substance and the fascinating Hugh Grant-starring film Heretic. I’m always partial to slashers, but I’m a big fan of the variety of scary stories that are being told.

2025 will be a big year for horror as well, with several highly anticipated films coming out next year such as M3GAN 2.0, Wolf Man, and Companion. Christopher Landon also has a new horror movie being released in the spring of 2025, and there are several reasons why I think it’s going to be his most frightening and fun movie yet.

Why I’m Excited For Christopher Landon’s Upcoming Horror Movie Drop

Freaky 2020 movie

According to Bloody Disgusting, Christopher Landon’s new horror movie Drop will be released on April 11, 2025. The premise is exciting right from the get-go. The movie stars Brandon Sklenar and Meghann Fahy as Henry and Violet, who are on a date that goes horribly wrong. Via drops on her cellphone, Violet learns that if she doesn’t follow the villain’s instructions, her babysitter and son will die. Henry could also die.

I think this is a cool twist on the typical home invasion thriller. Instead of a classic single-location horror movie, which can be powerful and shocking, it looks like the movie could focus on Violet and Henry’s date along with what’s going on back at her house. I like that Violet has to think fast, act on her feet, and save herself and other people while navigating a first date. There are so many scary stories to be told within the horror genre, including the upcoming Lucy Hale movie F*** Marry Kill, and this is a different take since the date seems to be going well. However, it’s possible that Henry is somehow connected, which makes the premise more compelling.

I can’t wait to find out who is targeting Violet and if she is as innocent and kind as she appears. I always like a horror movie that has a twist on a popular trope, and it’s possible that she isn’t who she seems.

What Are Some Of Meghann Fahy’s TV And Movie Roles?

  • Georgia Gibbons on Political Animals (2012)
  • Sutton Brady on The Bold Type (2017-2021)
  • Daphne Sullivan on The White Lotus (2022)
  • Merritt Monaco on The Perfect Couple (2024)
  • Jackie Dennon in Your Monster (2024)

Chances are that Drop will be as funny as Landon’s other horror movies, and that’s another reason why I’m excited for it. As he told The AU Review in 2020:

“I don’t know if it ever was something directly by design…I think I just found my way into it. Even when I was writing the
Paranormal Activity
films, comedy was important for me. And it was important that the characters were relatable and funny, I think it’s very disarming.”

Smile 2 combined humor with scares, and it’s an effective storytelling technique. I hope that there will be at least one scene of Violet and Henry joking around and having fun on their date before Violet realizes the horror that awaits her. I think that if Landon adds in his trademark humorous tone, then Drop will be even more fun to watch. Having a hilarious script would also make Drop more interesting than other horror movies about technology, including the awkward film Countdown which was released in 2019.

What Are Christopher Landon’s Other Horror Movies?

Babyface in Happy Death Day 2U

Christopher Landon has written and directed some of the best horror movies in the last few years. He directed Happy Death Day, which was released in 2017, and wrote and directed 2019’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U and 2020’s Freaky. He also wrote a few Paranormal Activity movies and wrote and directed the 2023 Netflix film We Have A Ghost.

Landon’s movies are light-hearted yet scary, and Freaky is particularly cool since it’s about a teenage girl and an older male serial killer switching bodies. In an interview with Decider.com, star Kathryn Newton explained why she wanted to be in the movie, and I agree that it’s a special, unique story. Newton said:

“I thought it was so fresh. You saw the movie—it kind of destroyed all the tropes that you’ve seen in other high school movies, other horror films. But we also play homage to them too. It was just a perfect movie.”

While I wait to see Drop, I’m also hoping for Happy Death Day 3.
