HoYoverse, the publisher behind popular games like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, recently won a major legal case against a cheat software developer. To make matters worse, the developer has been slapped with a $1.5 million fine for the copyright violation of Genshin Impact.
HoYoverse has a history of taking strict legal action against cheats and hacks
The case was brought to court by DLA Piper, representing HoYoverse’s legal entity, Cognosphere Pte. Ltd. The lawsuit focused on cheats created by the developer, who is noted to be a self-proclaimed hacker. This particular cheat software in question was designed to modify gameplay in Genshin Impact, which violates copyright laws and technological protection measures (TPMs) of the title.
The judgement found the defendant guilty of infringing HoYoverse’s copyright and awarded the company $1.5 million in damages. Additionally, the court issued an order preventing the defendant from further infringing HoYoverse’s rights.
Historically, HoYoverse has been very strict with its copyright laws and has been taking action ever since Genshin Impact saw light. Back in 2022, three people were sentenced to four years of Jail for producing illegal cheats and hacks, and in the same year, a huge controversy surrounding leaker Ubatcha was also there where he got issued a court order.
The next year, legal action against Fontaine leaks was taken and under HoYoverse’s Anti-Infringement Campaign, a group selling cheats for Genshin Impact was also being apprehended. This case might have been having a huge sum to pay for the developer who created cheat software, but at least it doesn’t give him jail time like other HoYoverse cases discussed here.
