The following article contains major spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Key Takeaways
- John Epler clarified the future of the Blight in a Reddit ask-me-anything.
- Grey Wardens no longer face the Calling, leading to an underwhelming end for the Warden’s journey.
- Epler teased a new threat facing Grey Wardens.
To celebrate Dragon Age Day on December 4, Dragon Age: The Veilguard directors John Epler and Corinne Busche held an ask-me-anything (AMA) on Reddit where the pair discussed a variety of topics.
In response to a question regarding the future of the Blight and the Grey Wardens, Epler provided a summary of what to expect, including what appears to be a teaser for another upcoming threat.
“The Blight is forever changed. It’s less perilous and less virulent than it was before, and whatever motive force was coming through the Veil to empower it at the end of the game has been severed,” Epler begins. “That said, it still exists in some form, and not everyone is going to be cured in the same way. Beyond that – the Wardens no longer hear the whisper of the Calling, but right at the edges of perception, they’re hearing something. What is it? Great Question.”
Call it Quits
With the Grey Wardens no longer hearing the Calling, this means the Warden’s search in the wilderness west of the Hunterhorn Mountains was ultimately fruitless. If the Warden remains alive, then they’ll no longer be threatened by the Calling. It’s sort of an underwhelming finale for the series’ original protagonist, but BioWare was always going to find it difficult to conclude the Warden’s story while never directly involving them in the events of subsequent games.
Epler’s allusion to a new threat developing at the edge of Grey Warden’s perceptions is an interesting one, but it’s not immediately clear what else could affect the Wardens besides the Blight. Presumably, Epler is teasing something that isn’t explicitly hinted at in the series’ existing lore, though we do know the Blight originated from the trapped dreams of Titans, so this new feeling could be something originating from that.
On the bright side, some of our good Warden friends won’t perish in the immediate future (if they still live). On the flip side, it’s sort of a muted end to the series’ pre-eminent threat.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in the fantasy RPG series from BioWare formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A direct sequel to Inquisition, it focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
