If you’re on the lookout for a new survival game to try, then I recommend Forever Skies. With a sci-fi and post-apocalyptic world reminiscent of Fallout and a gameplay loop akin to a skybound version of Subnautica, Forever Skies has been quietly getting better since its 2023 launch. Now, the team at Far From Home has finally added fully functional co-op alongside a huge update.
Forever Skies thrives on its airships. Flipping Subnautica’s underwater escapades on their head, this is a survival game where you take to the atmosphere. You build, customize, and pilot a giant airship, which acts as your new home well above the toxic, post-apocalyptic ruins of Earth.
To stay alive you need to manage the integrity of your ship, explore the world, scavenge for resources, and reverse engineer lost technology to thrive. Just like in Fallout, though, you’re returning to Earth hundreds of years after a disaster, and you’ll need to descend below the dust and explore an ecologically changed surface. The planet is now home to evolved flora and fauna, but these present unique opportunities for you, if you’ve got what it takes to venture forth.
The biggest new addition to Forever Skies is easily the co-op functionality. You and up to three friends can now work together to build, pilot, and customize your high-tech airship, and attempt to survive the ruins of the Earth’s toxic surface. You can now do everything Forever Skies has to offer with others, turning it into one of the best survival crafting games on Steam.
The new Forever Skies update doesn’t just add co-op, though, as Far From Home has completely overhauled your experience with improvements and new features. These changes take the form of the World Evolved update. I’m going to do my best to condense it for you.
First up, the Forever Skies survival, progression, and exploration loop has been completely overhauled. You can expect redesigns to the world layout, locations, and airship building mechanics, which all work better than ever now. The World Evolved update isn’t just revamping existing mechanics, either, with plenty of new experiences to sink your teeth into. Far From Home has added new enemies to fight, alongside fresh tools and devices to streamline your survival experience. There are also extra resources to discover and new dynamic random encounters to keep you on your toes.
Forever Skies even has some brand new crossers in the form of discoverable artifacts, just in case you want even more open-world survival crafting antics in your game time. You can find artifacts based on Planet Crafter, Pacific Drive, Frostpunk 2, and Medieval Dynasty in your travels.
Far From Home has launched the Forever Skies World Evolved and co-op update for free on Monday December 9. Forever Skies will also officially launch from Steam Early Access in early 2025. You can get involved with the game on Steam here.
