Star Wars: Skeleton Crew centers on four children who discover a buried spacecraft on their home planet At Attin and inadvertently activate the vessel, launching them deep into space. Thus far, their misadventure has taken the children–Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB–to a port occupied by a gang of pirates. These scoundrels imprison the kids with Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood, a force-sensitive man who offers to help them escape and bring them to their ship as long as he can go with them. It remains to be seen where these adventures will lead, but Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s creators already have plans for the future, including how they plan to avoid the Stranger Things problem with its cast of young actors.

During an interview with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew co-creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford revealed that they already have an idea for a second season. Of course, if Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is renewed, its cast of child actors will have aged by the time the second season begins production. However, Watts explained that they would solve this issue with a time jump:
We 100% have an idea for a second season and know what we would do. […] We have a built-in ticking clock of the kids and their age, and by the time we get production going, we know their age. So, we would be writing towards that. You’ll be growing up with the kids . […] It would be something like [a three to four-year time jump] to make sense. We haven’t seen the kids in a while, so it just depends on how tall the kids are. But we wouldn’t do like a Stranger Things thing where we’re like ‘It’s the next day,’ because it won’t be.
While this may seem like an obvious solution, Stranger Things hasn’t been able to avoid its cast of young actors aging out of their roles. Of course, Stranger Things had to contend with a global pandemic that shut down the industry and writers’ and actors’ strikes that delayed production. Still, fans find it increasingly difficult to suspend their disbelief when its cast of largely high school-age characters are played by actors who are now young adults. A Stranger Things time jump for season 5 could help, but it remains to be seen if the Netflix series will take that route. On the other hand, Ford expanded on Watt’s comments about how Star Wars: Skeleton Crew season 2 would employ the time jump solution:
It’s built into it that it would be a bigger time jump forward because it does take so long to get things moving. This isn’t like it would take place the next day because the kids are going to be older. […] There are so many repercussions. It’s like, you kind of want to catch up later.
Despite these plans, Lucasfilm has not officially announced a second season for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Still, the series is currently one of the more well-reviewed Disney Plus Star Wars shows, with fans praising the performances of Law and its cast of young actors, its new characters and environments, and for bringing a sense of adventure back to the franchise. Not everyone is a fan of the show, with the most common criticism from some being that it’s a lesser version of Amblin movies like The Goonies. Others are worried that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is repeating The Acolyte‘s mistake.
But the overwhelming response to Star Wars: Skeleton has been positive. If the series can maintain this goodwill throughout and stick the landing, it may be one of the most popular entries in the Star Wars franchise since Disney acquired the IP. If that popularity translates into views, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew may have a bright future.
