Pokemon TCG Pocket Will Get At Least 5,000 Different Cards

The success of Pokemon TCG Pocket during its first six weeks strongly implies the game is going to be around for a very long time. It seems the team behind it anticipated that as even though there are only around 300 cards to collect in Pokemon Pocket thus far, an achievement that’s already available to unlock in the game tasks you with collecting 5,000 of them.

Similar to Pokemon Go, Pokemon Pocket has achievements. If this is news to you, you can find them by clicking on your profile picture at the top of the page and then scrolling down. One of the achievement tracks tasks you with collecting as many different cards as possible. However, since unlocking the first stage requires you to collect 500 unique cards, even stage one of the track is impossible to complete at present.

That are four stages in Pocket’s unique card-collecting track. The first one unlocks after you get 500 cards, the next stage is 1,000 cards, then 2,000, and finally 5,000 cards. Just to be clear in case it wasn’t already, this isn’t just opening endless amounts of booster packs and racking up cards. These achievements can only be unlocked once more than 300 cards have been added to the game.

Not Duplicates, 5,000 Unique Cards

If you’re new to the Pokemon TCG, or Pocket has brought you back after falling off of the hobby for a few years, and you’re wondering whether there’s enough history to pull from to bring the app’s card total to 5,000 and beyond, there are no worries there. As of this year, there are more than 200,000 Pokemon cards and counting. Since new sets are released all the time, even if the pace at which new cards are added is upped significantly, the mobile game’s total will never catch up with the physical TCG.

Even though a few new cards have been added already via promo packs, Pocket’s base hasn’t been added to in any significant way since launch with just its three Genetic Apex packs to choose from. That is supposed to be changing before the end of 2024 via a new booster pack, and then its first big expansion in January 2025. Potentially a big month for Pocket as that’s also when limited trading will be introduced.

If the thought of 5,000 cards and new booster packs being introduced has panicked you a little, don’t worry. Even if you still have a lot of cards missing, you will still be able to keep opening Genetic Apex booster packs even after the new expansion has been released.
