The bigger question is how Black Doom even came to be in the first place. By looking at him, it’s clear he’s not a human, but also barely resembles the other aliens that occupy his army, presenting himself as some sort of mystical deity. Now that he has made a grand reappearance in Sonic X Shadow Generations though, Black Doom may have a chance of becoming a recurring character whenever Shadow shows up in the future.

As a result, despite helping Sonic along his journey to restoring the planet and defeating Eggman, the exact details of Chip’s origin remain a mystery, until the very last moments of the game. In a shocking twist, it is revealed this chocolate-loving carefree companion was actually Light Gaia, the light side of the planet’s cosmos, who is the only one capable of taking down Dark Gaia to save the planet, which he does so before sacrificing himself to save Sonic’s life. Nobody could have predicted Chip’s true identity on a first playthrough, but it’s certainly a satisfying payoff to the mystery that had players scratching their heads for much of the adventure.
