Key Takeaways

  • Creepy Nuts’ song stands out despite not being among the most played artists in Japan.
  • A sequel to Mashle: Magic and Muscles is in development post airing 24 episodes.

Spotify revealed the “songs of 2024” and Mashle: Magic and Muscles‘s second season opening “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” is one of the highlights in Japan! The season aired from January 6 to March 30, 2024, summing up 12 episodes (the first one also ran for 12 episodes, so Mashle has a total of 24 episodes so far).

“Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” is a single performed by Creepy Nuts, a hip hop duo who previously collaborated with the Call of the Night anime adaptation (performing “Daten”, the opening song). Mashle‘s OP topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for 19 non-consecutive weeks (for 8 weeks, it topped consecutively). They also perform “Otonoke”, DANDADAN‘s opening song.

The Winner Of The Year

According to the Spotify ranking, “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” was the most played song in Japan during 2024. Despite that, Creepy Nuts does not feature in the most played artist ranking, so it’s more like people were mostly listening to this specific song. That’s not uncommon: Sabrina Carpenter’s “Expresso” topped the global most played song Spotify chart, but she is also not in the top artists ranking.

“Rairakku” (Mrs. GREEN APPLE) and “Ikuokukonen” (Omoinotake) featured in second and third place, respectively. Ms. GREEN APPLE was the top band/artist among the Japanese public.

Mashle: Magic And Muscle Story & Anime

Mashle anime adapts the same name manga by Hajime Komoto, serialized in Shonen Jump from 2020 to 2023. All 18 volumes are published in the US by VIZ Media. “Mashle” reminds the way Japanese people would pronounce the English word “muscle”, which fits the story setting: it takes place in a world filled with magic, as it is the magical abilities that define the social status of people. In this scenario, Mash Burnedead is raised by his adoptive father, Regro, who makes him train hard, so his physical strength is outstanding. But one day, he is forced to enroll a magic school. The catch is: he has no magical abilities at all, so he needs to prove his muscles can handle any magic.

A-1 Pictures, the studio behind several hits like Fairy Tail, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Sword Art Online and Solo Leveling, is in charge of the animation. The series is directed by Tomoya Tanaka (Visual Prison), and Yusoku Kuroda (My Hero Academia) is the head writer in charge of the scripts.

Despite the first season’s success, reception to the second one was more mixed, but it was able to trend on social media anyway.

A sequel series is already in development (it was not announced as a new season).
