Key Takeaways
- Doug Cockle is unsure if Geralt will return in The Witcher 4, as CD Projekt Red is keeping details under wraps.
- The next game may focus on a new protagonist, possibly Ciri, but Geralt could return in a supporting role.
- Cockle retracted an earlier claim of Geralt returning, based on a rumor that may have come from a former CDPR employee.
Geralt of Rivia actor Doug Cockle doesn’t know if the White Wolf is returning in The Witcher 4, and CD Projekt Red doesn’t want him to talk about it. Long before Henry Cavil and Liam Hemsworth brought Geralt to life in the live-action Witcher Netflix series, voice actor Doug Cockle provided the famed monster slayer with his signature gravelly tone in all three of CDPR’s Witcher games. His performance is beloved by players, so much so that many fans are hoping to hear him again in The Witcher 4.
However, there is a lot about The Witcher 4 still wrapped in mystery, first and foremost being its plot and main character. The next Witcher game may see Geralt hang up his two swords in favor of a new playable protagonist, with many guessing that his protege Ciri will take the stage in the tentatively named Witcher 4. On the other hand, game director Sebastian Kalemb previously hinted that Geralt could return after all, at least in a supporting role to help the transition to a new era for the hit RPG franchise.

The Witcher 4 Gets Exciting Update From CD Projekt Red
CD Projekt Red gives fans of the Witcher franchise a very exciting update regarding Project Polaris, regarded by some fans as The Witcher 4.
Unsurprisingly, Geralt’s original voice actor Doug Cockle has been asked if he will come back as the White Wolf in The Witcher 4, and even seemed to confirm as much in an interview back in August. Since then, however, Cockle revealed that he has been “slapped” by CD Projekt Red and clarified in an interview with MCM Comic Con Birmingham (via GamesRadar) that his previous claims were based on an unverified rumor. In truth, Cockle only knows as much as anyone else outside of CDPR if Geralt is indeed going to appear in The Witcher 4.
Doug Cockle Retracts Claim that Geralt is Returning in The Witcher 4
Even during his initial claim of Geralt coming back in The Witcher 4, Doug Cockle said that he wouldn’t be the main character and that the game would be focused on someone else. When asked where this rumor initially came from, Cockle speculated that it could have come from a former CDPR employee dating back a few years. In any case, Cockle reiterated that he actually doesn’t know anything about The Witcher 4, and that if CDPR is indeed planning to bring Geralt back he hasn’t been told yet.
The Witcher 4 probably won’t be released for at least a few more years, so it may still be a while before CDPR is ready to share plot details with the gaming public. In the past, Doug Cockle has said that he would love to return to the role of Geralt of Rivia if asked, and there are plenty of gamers who would love to hear his gruff voice in The Witcher 4, even if it is just for a minor appearance that passes the torch to a new protagonist.
