Canceled Amazon MMO Blue Protocol is coming back as spinoff Star Resonance

Blue Protocol is back from the dead – kind of. After Bandai Namco Online announced that the MMORPG would be closing down in 2025, and the Amazon-published western release was canceled at the same time, another game set within the same IP is gearing up for launch. So while Blue Protocol might remain a distant memory, the upcoming Star Resonance will at least provide some much-needed solace.

Earlier this year Bandai Namco Online announced that Blue Protocol was ending service in Japan, and that the western version of the anime MMORPG – published by Amazon – was also canceled. At the time, however, it was unclear what had happened to the Shanghai Bokura Network-developed version of Blue Protocol. Now, it seems, we have an answer.

Bokura has fully unveiled Star Resonance, an upcoming MMO that appears to take place in Blue Protocol’s world of Regnas. According to a report from Automaton, a closed beta test is coming to Chinese players soon with recruitment open now. That said, there’s no word on a full release date for Star Resonance, or whether it will get a global launch outside of China. We never got Blue Protocol in the west, but maybe we’ll get Star Resonance.

As for Blue Protocol itself, I wouldn’t hold out hope. The Blue Protocol Steam page has been delisted, and there’s been no word on the game’s return since Bandai Namco Online announced it was being canceled. The game’s Japanese version is scheduled to be discontinued on Saturday January 18, 2025. Still, if you’re curious about what led to the game’s cancellation, we’ve got the complete Blue Protocol timeline for you to catch up on.
