One Year Later, Blasphemous 2 is More Than the Sum of Its Metroidvania Soulslike Parts
Blasphemous 2 isn’t quite finished its tale yet, but one year after release it’s still a stunning sequel that hoists gameplay in nearly every way.
Some of the most important aspects of these updates are a revamp of Blasphemous 2’s True Torment Mode. Now, if players Ascend their save files and start a new game, they’ll get to keep their weapons along with Figures, Prayers, Rosary Beads, and more. This only applies to saves Ascended after the update; saves Ascended before will trigger the “Ultimate Torment” challenge, which removes weapons and items for a tougher experience that can’t be undone.
On top of this, Blasphemous 2 is adding better save file management to help prevent accidental deletions. The update also brings balancing changes to Blasphemous 2’s bosses, enemies, and challenges, specifically for Ascended playthroughs. These tweaks are meant to smooth out the game’s difficulty, keeping it tough but fair for experienced players.
The update also fixes a bunch of bugs and gameplay problems, like Gold Lumps disappearing after death, which was stopping players from unlocking the final reward and achievement. It also clears up issues with softlocks from certain actions, tweaks hitboxes and damage for enemies and bosses. The Game Kitchen is adding visual and audio improvements too, making animations smoother, enhancing sound effects, and updating the menu design. Other fixes include getting the Golden Bile Flask working again, fixing cutscene issues, and correcting bugs with the Cherub counter, True Torment challenge difficulty, and weapon damage values.
The Blasphemous 2 Mea Culpa and True Torment updates bring new challenges and improvements that enhance the player experience on PS4 and PS5. The revamped mechanics of True Torment Mode make Blasphemous 2’s Soulslike style even more demanding, appealing to those eager to keep exploring the region of Cvstodia.
