The following article contains spoilers for the second season of Arcane.
Key Takeaways
- Arcane’s characters could appear in future shows.
- There are a couple of characters that could reasonably appear in other locations of Runeterra.
- Only time will tell.
Christian Linke has again commented on potential follow-ups to Arcane, this time in an interview with The Direct (nice spot, Games Radar+). Linke revealed an intriguing piece of information during this interview: Arcane isn’t the last we’ve seen of its characters.
In response to a question about a third season of Arcane, Linke revealed that although they had never considered a third season, he would certainly like to continue the stories of Arcane’s characters, “Not season three so much, but individual stories of certain characters that are in Arcane, in both seasons,” Linke said.
Essentially, Linke is alluding to Arcane not being an isolated story, its characters will remain relevant for the future of the shared universe, “[There] definitely are like… “Hey, let’s continue their stories in their own kind of franchises and stories.” So definitely, Arcane is just the first. We want to continue telling stories,” Linke revealed.
Political Machinations
Both Linke and Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill have alluded to the next show exploring the regions of Noxus, Demacia and Ionia. The political machinations of Noxus featured heavily in the second season of Arcane. Ambessa Medarda and her conflict with The Black Rose is our main exposure to Noxus during Arcane. However, one of the show’s final scenes references Swain, meaning we’ll likely see the full spectrum of Noxian politics in Arcane’s follow-up.
As for characters that could potentially appear in the next show: Mel Medarda seems an obvious choice. Mel is a Noxian who, like her mother, has already made an enemy of The Black Rose. She has more cause than any other character to have a direct involvement in the plot of a Noxus-centric show.
In League of Legends lore, Singed is responsible for bringing chemical warfare to the battlefield during the Noxian invasion of Ionia. The scientist has already worked with Noxus (Ambessa) and could continue in this role if it brings him closer to resurrecting his daughter (Orianna).
There are no Demacian or Ionian champions in Arcane, so you wouldn’t expect any of the show’s characters to pop up in these regions. There’s a chance that Caitlyn and Vi, now a vagabond couple with an airship, could appear in other locations on Runeterra.
We’ll just have to wait and see, considering the length of time it took Studio Fortiche to animate Arcane, there probably won’t be a follow-up for at least two or three years.
Set in the League of Legends universe, Arcane focuses on sisters Violet and Powder (later Jinx) as they end up on opposite sides of a growing conflict between the wealthy utopia of Piltover and its dark undercity whose citizens wish to break away from their oppressors. Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, and Kevin Alejandro star in this animated adventure.
