Tactical Takedown Takes Place After Shredder And Splinter Have Died

Tactical Takedown Takes Place After Shredder And Splinter Have Died

Key Takeaways

  • Earlier this week, Strange Scaffold revealed that it’s developing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown.
  • One thing that wasn’t made clear by the trailer is that the story takes place after Shredder and Splinter have died.
  • This choice was made so that the team could tell the story of what “comes next” for the TMNT.

The recently-revealed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown uniquely (and depressingly!) starts things off with Splinter and Shredder already having been killed.

For most of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ time in the world of gaming, the radical four have been known for one thing – arcade beat ’em ups. While they still hold the crown in the brawler space, developers have recently started branching out and putting the group into other genres, like Splintered Fate’s take on Rougelikes and Mutants Unleashed with its Persona inspirations.

TMNT: Splintered Fate’s Steam Port Is A Big Improvement Over The Switch Release

Splintered Fate’s PC release has dragged me right back into the Hades in a half-shell life, and I don’t mind one bit.

Those two games were just the start, though, as it was recently announced that the Turtles would be getting their own tactical game next in the form of Strange Scaffold’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown. It’s already interesting enough to see the group in such a different setting, and that’s before you know what the plot is all about.

Don’t Expect To See Shredder And Splinter In TMNT: Tactical Takedown

One thing the reveal trailer for Tactical Takedown didn’t tell you is that the story takes place after Shredder and Splinter have both died. It’s not clear right now how the long-time enemies passed away, but it’s a unique position to put the brothers in and will surely make the tale the game is telling a memorable one.

We have no clue how Shredder and Splinter died, but I’m betting that it was in a climactic battle with one another. Nothing like a hero’s sacrifice to kickstart a journey.

As pointed out by GamesRadar+, Strange Scaffold’s founder, Xalavier Nelson Jr., recently took to Twitter to explain why Tactical Takedown chose this surprisingly dark approach to the story. Nelson Jr. points out that the team was allowed to “kill Splinter and Shredder before the first line of dialogue”, and that the story focuses on “what comes next” for the team.

We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out when Tactical Takedown launches, but for now it’s pretty clear that the Turtles are going to have to face some tough odds and personal challenges. For a non-tactics player like myself, that’s more than enough to get me hooked in.
