Path of Exile II
has made some major changes to how auras, trigger gems, and minions work. All of these mechanics are now tied to a new resource called Spirit, which you’ll need to summon an army of skeletons or to empower yourself with a wide assortment of auras.

The Mysterious Shade is a quest in Path of Exile 2 that ultimately unlocks the ability to refund passives. Here, you can learn how to complete it.
While Spirit is a fairly important resource, there aren’t many ways you can scale this resource. In this guide, we’ll give a brief overview of how Spirit works in PoE2 and explain every accessible source of Spirit while leveling, ranging from items you can use to certain Ascendancies that offer Spirit through certain upgrades.
What Is Spirit?
Spirit is a new resource in Path of Exile 2 that is used to reserve auras, meta gems, and summon minions—Mana is no longer used to reserve auras. You won’t have any Spirit to start with, but you’ll increase this resource throughout the campaign by consuming certain boss drops and equipping certain items.
Your character’s Spirit is automatically reserved whenever you activate a meta gem on your skill bar, including auras. If you don’t have enough Spirit to spare, you won’t be able to activate the skill or meta gem. There aren’t any limits to how many auras or meta gems you can have equipped, so long as you have sufficient Spirit.
Minions are a little different. To summon revivable minions, you’ll need to open your skill tab and allocate Spirit to the skill gem. When you check your skill page, you should see a minion count where the DPS meter usually is, located right next to the gem’s level. Clicking the plus icon will summon more minions at the cost of Spirit and vice versa.
You can reduce the Spirit reservation of summons by leveling your minion gems.
How To Increase Your Spirit
By default, your character won’t have any Spirit to allocate, but you can increase your Spirit reserves through the following means:
- Equip a sceptre.
- Defeat optional bosses.
- Look for “+Spirit” affixes on your items.
- Play Infernalist.
Sceptres And Affixes
The best way you can increase your Spirit in the early game is to equip a sceptre in your off-hand slot. A spectre grants +100 Spirit as an implicit and can roll with “+Spirit” affixes, further increasing your Spirit capacity.
Certain items can also roll with Spirit affixes, notably body armor. Keep your eyes peeled for any items that increase your Spirit capacity as you play through the campaign.
Optional Bosses
Certain bosses in the Path of Exile 2 campaign drop consumable items that, when used, will grant your character a permanent stat increase. Some of these consumables will permanently increase your Spirit by a small amount. Clear any nodes on the world map with a plus icon beside them. Your first kill against the listed boss will drop a permanent character buff.
Infernalist
If you plan on creating a summoner, you might want to give the Witch’s Infernalist Ascendancy a try. One of their first Ascendancy nodes, Beidat’s Will, increases your Spirit per 25 maximum Life. This node reserves a portion of maximum Life, but the boost to your maximum Spirit can prove useful if you want to squeeze out as many auras or minions as possible in your build.
