Key Takeaways
- Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel might not add any new Samurai tracks.
- This comes from composer P.T. Adamczyk, who says there are no plans to bring the in-universe band back right now.
- However, we’re likely still far away from the sequel’s score being composed and recorded, so this hasn’t been decided yet.
Cyberpunk 2077 is full of music, both licenced and composed specifically for the game. Some of the most iconic tracks come from the in-universe band Samurai, performed by real-life Swedish band Refused. In the world of Cyberpunk, Samurai were headed by frontman Johnny Silverhand, the same fella living in our head, so of course we hear a lot of their tracks in the game.
However, with the next Cyberpunk game, currently known as Project Orion, likely taking a new direction, it seems we’re leaving Samurai behind. That’s at least according to the composer P.T. Adamczyk, who worked on the band’s music in Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 Composer Discusses Music On The Sequel
Don’t expect to hear any more Johnny Silverhand
This comes from a Reddit AMA, in which Adamczyk was asked if we’ll get another Samurai album in the next Cyberpunk game.
“I dunno,” says Adamczyk. “As of now we don’t have any plans for next samurai tracks, but who knows. Maybe in the future we will commission more. Hard to tell [sic].”
This doesn’t mean that it’s being ruled out, but it certainly isn’t a guarantee either. Elsewhere in the AMA, Adamczyk mentions that he started working on the soundtrack for Cyberpunk 2077 about three years before it launched, and we’re likely very far away from the sequel’s launch now. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of new tracks are composed for the game.
As for the lack of new Samurai material, that wouldn’t be overly surprising. While they may predate the events of 2077 quite a bit, making it very possible to include them in a sequel, they have such a heavy presence in the game because their frontman is with us for most of the story. With the multiple endings of 2077 making it incredibly difficult to bring either V or Johnny back, it’s likely that the sequel will introduce new protagonists, with the themes of their story influencing the score and radio music instead.
Developed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person action role-playing game based on the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG. You must choose your path through life in the lawless Night City, while contending with the memories of Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves).
