Astro Bot Is The Ninth PlayStation GOTY Nominee In A Row

Astro Bot Is The Ninth PlayStation GOTY Nominee In A Row

Key Takeaways

  • Astro Bot’s recent nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards marks the ninth year in a row a PlayStation game has been nominated.
  • However, only two PlayStation games out of the 13 nominated have won the award so far, so Team Asobi will likely have its fingers crossed it nabs a third.

PlayStation is arguably the top dog when it comes to proper big budget, blockbuster console games these days. Nintendo is off in the corner doing its own things, while Xbox is being Xbox, and pretty much all of PlayStation’s success over the years is down to its incredible lineup of games. Whether you like PlayStation, or hate it, you have to admit its output has been incredible over the past decade.

It seems like PlayStation puts out at least one banger every year, even during the slower ones like 2024, with Astro Bot leading the way for PlayStation this time around. In fact, Astro Bot’s recent nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards is actually the ninth year in a row that PlayStation has had a title nominated for the grand prize.

The Game Awards started way back in 2014, with Dragon Age: Inquisition taking home the Game of the Year award, but ever since, PlayStation has had some kind of representation in that category every year. Bloodborne (my darling beloved) was nominated in 2015, while Uncharted 4 was nominated in 2016, and Horizon Zero Dawn was nominated in 2017.

2018 saw two PlayStation games nominated for the award, those being God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man, while Death Stranding was nominated in 2019. We then saw another double nomination in 2020 with Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, and then Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was PlayStation’s representation in 2021.

I’m Conflicted About Astro Bot As Game Of The Year

Astro Bot is a great but ultimately shallow game – how much does that matter when it’s so enjoyable?

Yet another double nomination occurred in 2022, with Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarök, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was nominated in 2023. That brings us to the present day and Astro Bot’s nomination in 2024, meaning PlayStation has had a whopping 13 games nominated for Game of the Year over the span of nine years.

Funnily enough, only two of those games actually ended up winning the award, those being God of War in 2018 and The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020. You could take that as PlayStation having a reputation for making great games with no real cutting edge over other competitors, but the company and developer Team Asobi will be hoping that Astro Bot can give PlayStation that elusive third win.
