Key Takeaways
- After a character dies in One Piece, their Devil Fruit returns to circulation.
- Not all Devil Fruits find new users, potentially leaving interesting powers lost.
- Characters like Corazon, Monet, and Smiley had potential with their Devil Fruits but were taken away too soon.
Devil Fruits, despite being rare in the grand scheme of the One Piece world, are fairly plentiful in the show. With most strong enemies that the Straw Hats must face on their journeys possessing at least a few Devil Fruit users on their crew, so many unique abilities and powers have been introduced to the franchise. With well over 100 canon Devil Fruits in circulation throughout One Piece, almost every power has its place in the story.
However, many times, after a character is defeated, generally their interesting powers disappear from the story along with the characters themselves. Additionally, on the other hand, when a character is killed, their Devil Fruit returns to circulation, waiting for a new user. A few of these lost Devil Fruits are so interesting that it would be a shame if they never found their way back into the world of One Piece.

One Piece User’s Fruits Are Reborn After Death
An Endless Cycle
As many fans already know, despite One Piece Devil Fruits returning to circulation after the user is killed, not every missing Devil Fruit has found a new user. In some instances, the fruit seems to generate itself almost randomly, waiting to once again be consumed. So far, potentially 12 One Piece characters with Devil Fruits have died, with only 8 of those fruits finding new users.
If you ever think of me in the future, I want you to remember me smiling. – Corazon
Among these users are Donquixote Corazon, the former wielder of the Calm-Calm Fruit, Monet, the former wielder of the Snow-Snow Fruit, and Smiley, the former wielder of the Sala-Sala Fruit: Model Axolotl. Each of these characters, all appearing sometime in One Piece’s Dressrosa Saga, all met unfortunate ends, with Corezon’s death being one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire series. However, since the demise of each of the characters, their Devil Fruits, despite being shown to be back in circulation, are still currently lost.
Corazon’s Calm-Calm Fruit Could Return
An Awakened Calm-Calm Fruit
First and foremost, seeing Corazon’s Calm-Calm Fruit reappear in the story would make for a few interesting scenarios. Firstly, while we got to briefly see the Calm-Calm Fruit during Law’s backstory in One Piece, the seemingly weaker fruit could have many applications that a skilled user like Corazon could have in their arsenal. Additionally, seeing Law potentially come into contact with the Devil Fruit of his former mentor and father figure may become a nice moment of closure for the character.

Additionally, it would be interesting to see the potential Devil Fruit awakening for the Calm-Calm Fruit and how those powers could be used. With his brother, Doflamingo, awakening the String-String Fruit, if Corazon were still alive, he may have had the power and talent to eventually awaken his own fruit like his brother. A new user, following in the footsteps of Corazon, could eventually bring this to a reality, creating a power that could have the potential of silencing armies.
Monet’s and Smiley’s Fruits Had More Potential
Taken Away Too Soon
Next, Monet, the former user of the Snow-Snow Fruit, was killed off after Law tricked Caeser during the Dressrosa Saga. Her fruit, although it’s considered to be one of the weaker Logia Devil Fruits, may just be suffering from its user. In fact, a stronger wielder could take the Snow-Snow Fruit to the next level. Although it most likely still wouldn’t match the power of something like Kuzan’s Ice-Ice Fruit, never seeing the fruit reach its full potential would be disappointing.
Good work Smiley! Let us meet again. – Caeser to Smiley after the latters death
Lastly, Smiley, the mass of poison that was given life through the Axolotl Fruit, passed away towards the end of Punk Hazard. His ability could have been a strong Devil Fruit in terms of healing, demonstrating the incredible regenerative ability of axolotls. In fact, it could rival the healing powers of even Marco’s Phoenix Devil Fruit. Plus, due to the amphibious nature of Axolotl’s and the weakness of water from Devil Fruits, the Axolotl Fruit may not be able to function correctly on a living user. Seeing the fruit return would answer these pressing questions.
In the end, sadly, it seems that One Piece has moved past these interesting Devil Fruit, burying them with their original users. Overall, this may be for the best, especially for Corazon, since a new user may be disrespectful to the memory of the original character. Even with a new Calm-Calm Fruit user, no character could match the One Piece legend that is Corazon.
