The Penguin established itself as not only one of the best superhero series of 2024 but also one of the best TV shows of the year in general. That quality is now being reflected in the awards season as The Penguin has earned its first nominations.
The Penguin is a spin-off series set in the world of The Batman, which was established by Matt Reeves in 2022. Unlike the new DCU that just began under James Gunn, The Batman exists in an Elseworlds universe that allows it to tell stories and use characters that don’t impact the main continuity of the DC universe. The Penguin is set after the events of the 2022 film and sees Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oswald Cobb, a gangster who attempts to seize his place at the top of the criminal empire following Carmine Falcone’s death. He’s not the only one, however, with Carmine’s daughter Sofia (Cristin Milioti) and his rival Sal Maroni also attempting to gain control of Gotham’s underworld. The Penguin lasted eight episodes and was widely acclaimed by both critics and fans, establishing the series in the upper echelon of superhero TV series to date.
