Predicting Borderlands 4's New Trailer's Release Date

After a long wait, Borderlands 4, the next mainline installment in Gearbox Software’s iconic looter shooter series, is finally coming in 2025. Although Borderlands as an IP hasn’t exactly been dormant these past few years, it’s been more than half a decade since a new numbered entry in the series has been released. Gearbox hasn’t revealed any gameplay for Borderlands 4 just yet, but it does seem like the game is going to differ considerably from its predecessors in at least a few aspects. Unlike the previous installments in the franchise, for instance, this game is going to take place on an entirely new planet outside of Pandora. While it’s unclear just how different the setting and story of BL4 will be compared to the original Borderlands trilogy, fans will probably not have to wait too long to find out.

Randy Pitchford, one of the co-founders of Gearbox, recently revealed on Twitter that the studio was “cooking up” a new trailer for Borderlands 4, which he described as “badass.” Even though Pitchford admitted that he wasn’t supposed to be talking about this trailer yet, he still spilled the beans regardless because he couldn’t contain his excitement. Pitchford, of course, didn’t share any details about when the Borderlands 4 teaser would be released, but taking the current time of year into account, one can easily make some educated guesses.

A New Trailer for Borderlands 4 Appears to Be Imminent

Fans Will Most Likely Get a New Look at Borderlands 4 During The Game Awards

2024 is almost over, but that doesn’t mean that the gaming news cycle has come to an end. As most gamers will know, December is still a big month in the world of video games, in large part thanks to The Game Awards. Geoff Keighley’s annual awards ceremony has caught some flack in recent years for its treatment of recipients on-stage and its controversial nominees, but it is usually filled with exciting reveals from game developers, both big and small. It also attracts large audiences year in and year out and is probably the closest event there is to E3 these days.

The Game Awards 2024 airs on December 12, a bit later than usual this year. Since the event is just a few days away, it seems very plausible that Borderlands 4 will make an appearance here. After all, if Gearbox has no intention of showing the new Borderlands 4 trailer off at the TGAs, it would be strange for Pitchford to announce it shortly before the showcase takes place. Borderlands 4 was previously unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live, another Geoff Keighley-hosted event, so a Game Awards reveal wouldn’t be surprising.

If Borderlands 4 is a No-Show at The Game Awards, It May Make An Appearance At a State of Play

Of course, there is always a chance, no matter how small, that BL4 doesn’t show up at the TGAs. If that does happen, then one can assume that the game’s new trailer will be revealed during one of the annual gaming presentations at the start of 2025. The most likely candidate in this instance is the PlayStation State of Play. Sony tends to host SoPs during the first quarter of each year, so it is probable that it may have another presentation at the end of January or early February. Since Gearbox has shown off its games at State of Plays in the past, there is a possibility that Borderlands 4 may be revealed here.

Xbox does host shows at the start of each year as well, like the January Developer_Direct and the March Partner Preview, but since major AAA third-party games typically aren’t unveiled at these events, it doesn’t seem probable that
Borderlands 4
would show up at either of them.

Borderlands 4 Showing Up At the Switch 2 Reveal Event is Possible, But Unlikely

One plausible, albeit highly unlikely, scenario is that Borderlands 4 makes an appearance at the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal event, which is supposed to take place before the end of March 2024. Borderlands 4 has not been confirmed for a Nintendo console, but given that the first three games in the series are available on the current Switch, it doesn’t seem too unrealistic to assume that it may hit the Switch 2 alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on day-one, potentially as a launch title for Nintendo’s next system. If, say, the Switch 2 is announced in January, Borderlands 4‘s new trailer being released at the event would make sense.
