Oda Adds Further Depth To Robin’s Flashback
- Nico Robin’s journey after the Ohara Incident was depicted
- Fans come to love Robin’s flashback more than ever before
Nico Robin’s backstory was already one of the very best in One Piece. It was shown to the fans in the Enies Lobby arc, and there, it was revealed that Robin hailed from the island of Ohara, which became the target of the World Government about 22 years ago. On the island of Ohara, there existed many scholars, and just like any other scholar in archaeology, their research often included subjects of history. However, it was clear to them that the history that they were studying was fabricated and much of it was hidden by the World Government.
Ohara fought the world! – Saul
Naturally, they wanted to seek the truth out and eventually, they realized that the poneglyphs held the truth. On the island of Ohara, research was being conducted pertaining to the Ancient Kingdom and its mysterious disappearance, as well as the creation of the World Government. The news of this research broke out. However, the World Government attacked the island, raising it to dust and completely wiping it off the face of the Earth. Amidst all this, fans saw a young Nico Robin being caught in the turmoil. Having already been left behind by her parents, Robin had to grow up in a tremendously harsh environment, where she had no one to truly depend on, despite being quite young.
To make things worse, she was bullied by just about everyone and called a demon. If there was one thing that gave Robin comfort it was the fact that she hung out with fellow researchers and archaeologists, and this was simply down to the fact that Robin loved to read. Robin was a genius, such that by the age of eight, she had already become a scholar by passing a very high-level exam. Robin had even learned how to read Poneglyphs, and her interest was to find out the true history of the world, just like all the others on the island and this is what led to the biggest tragedy in her life. Having acquired a found family in the scholars of Ohara, and a mysterious giant who washed up on the shores of the island, named Saul, Robin finally started living a happy life until it all came crashing down with the Government’s attack.
Eventually, Ohara was completely wiped out and Robin only managed to survive due to Kuzan sparing her life. Saul, her benefactor, was frozen to the bone on the island and left behind to die. Every other scholar was murdered and all the people from Ohara were mercilessly slaughtered by Akainu . Robin became the last known surviving scholar from the island and had to live, from that time, with a bounty of 79 million berries on her head. Robin faced countless betrayals, despite being only a child and lived off of scraps and that is where Oda added new depth to her story.

In One Piece chapter 1133, Oda showed once again that he is truly the master of flashbacks.
