Netflix’s Carry On Is A Christmas Action Movie And I Can’t Wait

Netflix's Carry On Is A Christmas Action Movie And I Can't Wait

Key Takeaways

  • Netflix produces some of the best holiday movies each year, cheesy yet heartwarming.
  • “Carry On” is an upcoming action-packed Christmas movie featuring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman.
  • The movie combines a busy setting, a likable character, and a threatening villain for a unique holiday tale.

I’m not against watching a Hallmark Christmas movie, but there’s no doubt that Netflix puts out some of the best holiday movies every year. So far this year, I’ve watched Our Little Secret starring Lindsay Lohan, The Merry Gentleman starring Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray, and Hot Frosty starring Lacey Chabert. The best Christmas movies on the streaming service are always cheesy, feel-good fare and make people feel cozy. Sometimes the plots are hard to believe, but that can be part of why they’re enjoyable.

Although of course corny movies are always going to be part of my festive season, I also want a story that is a bit more compelling. There’s an upcoming Netflix Christmas movie that also tells an action-packed tale, and I’m looking forward to watching it on December 13th, 2024.

I’m Excited About The Netflix Christmas Action Movie Carry On

Sofia Carson in Carry On

Written by T.J. Fixman and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry On stars Taron Egerton as Ethan, a TSA agent working during the festive season. While that would be overwhelming and busy enough, he has to deal with a terrorist who asks him to put a bag on the flight. Jason Bateman plays the bad guy in this movie, which is different since he usually portrays likable characters. Although the actor directed the smart film Bad Words, he’s mostly known for his roles in comedies like Horrible Bosses and Arrested Development. Technically, his character is called “The Mysterious Traveler,” which I think is great, and I’m marking my calendar for December 13th.

I like the premise of Carry On because it includes everything that should be included in a Christmas movie: a busy setting, a likable character, and a villain who threatens to ruin this time of year for everyone. In this case, the villain could hurt or even kill people, which makes it scarier than the average holiday flick. I’m looking forward to seeing the dynamic between Egerton and Bateman’s characters. If this movie was set any other time of year, it would be like every other action movie. But, instead, Carry On tells an interesting story about someone who is just trying to deal with another busy holiday season at their already busy job. Now they have to save the day, whether they’re ready for it or not. I’m excited to see how Ethan figures out how to stop The Mysterious Traveler. After all, this is a Christmas movie, and it’s clear that he’s going to win.

Egerton has given some great interviews about Carry On. He told Entertainment Weekly of his character:

“I think he’s someone who lacks a sense of drive and direction but is ultimately really resourceful and capable. He’s a bit of a hero in waiting. He’s pretty noble and selfless. He has all the qualities of an archetypal hero underneath the lack of direction.”

After reading Egerton’s description of his character and watching the trailer, I have a feeling that Carry On will be a favorite Christmas movie for many. While people have a long list of kid-friendly Christmas movies that they like watching every year, especially since so many of these stories are nostalgic, it’s nice to see something different.

What Are Some Other Great Christmas Action Movies?

Several action movies are set during Christmas, including Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and, of course, the Die Hard franchise. It’s refreshing to check out different Christmas movies, including Iron Man 3, and see something other than a typical cheesy storyline. I like that Carry On continues the tradition of these stories while telling a unique tale about a packed airport during the holiday season. From the trailer, it looks like the kind of movie that has everyone on the edge of their seats.

For years now, people have debated whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Some think of course it is because it’s set during the winter holidays. Others say it can’t possibly be because it’s about thrilling action instead of being a cozy, heartwarming tale. According to Comicbook.com, John McTiernan, the director of Hard, puts it in that category. He said:

“we hadn’t intended it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came from it is what turned it in to a Christmas movie.”

However, as Comicbook.com noted, Bruce Willis said in 2018, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.” I would argue that although Willis starred in many other movies, including sci-fi films, there’s no denying that Die Hard is his most famous film. No matter what the actor said, people are always going to watch it during the holidays. But perhaps they will add Carry On to their annual must-watch list.
