Key Takeaways
- Scream 7 might have hinted at the killer early on.
- The idea of Sidney and Randy dating was entertained.
- Notable couples in the Scream franchise are discussed.
I’ve been ready for Scream 7 ever since the end credits of Scream 6 rolled, and I’ve enjoyed every movie in the horror franchise. Like many slasher fans, I appreciate the humor that the franchise has, and I like how wise and strong final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is. I’m also a big fan of Kevin Williamson, who created the teen drama Dawson’s Creek and wrote Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4.
I enjoy reading interviews with Williamson and hearing his perspective on the slasher tale. While it’s fun to hear what he thinks about the most recent movies, he has also reflected a lot on past entries. I like this Williamson interview about Scream 2 when he mentioned a potential couple, and now I’m wondering if these two characters could have had a love story.

Kevin Williamson Answered A Question About Sidney Prescott And Randy Meeks Dating In Scream 2, And I Love This Idea
In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Williamson answered a question about whether he was planning on having the intelligent final girl Sidney Prescott and Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) date. He said:
“No, I thought it should just always be his crush. He was always sort of the guy who had the crush and they were meant to be friends always.”
Williamson added that Kennedy and Campbell asked the legendary horror director Wes Craven what he thought, and Craven deferred to Williamson. The writer/director continued:
“Yes, he would love it, he also knows that’s not going to happen, and she knows it’s not going to happen, but they have that sort of flirty thing. He flirts with her and she just puts up with it. They’re bonded after the first movie. I think they’re family at that point.”
Williamson has always sounded fond of Randy when he speaks about the film geek character, and he even said he regretted killing him off. I’m also fond of Randy and now I’m sad that Sidney and Randy never dated. Although Sidney’s love life has never been the point of her storyline, it would have been nice to see her in a happy relationship in Scream 2. Sure, she dated Derek Feldman (Jerry O’Connell), but I never thought that he was a particularly interesting or memorable choice for her. After Sidney was terrorized by her own boyfriend/Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Scream, she deserved to be with a sweet person like Randy.
As smart as I think Randy is, I do think he should have died in Scream 2 as it proves how dangerous Ghostface is. And it would have been devastating if Sidney had lost someone who she was in love with. But at the same time, I think if these two characters were in a relationship, then Randy’s death would have been even more impactful.
Scream 2 is a solid sequel, but I think Sidney seemed a bit lonely. She makes new friends at college, which is nice to see, and she has her old friend Randy to lean on. But it would have been charming to see the two of them dating, even if Scream 2 only featured a few scenes of them having fun together. This could have added some necessary levity and fun.
Who Are The Most Famous Couples In The Scream Franchise?
There are several couples in the Scream movies, the most notable being Sidney and Billy in the first film. Even before Sidney suspects Billy of being the killer, they’re experiencing tension since he pressures her to be more intimate than she’s comfortable with. Another memorable relationship is between Sidney and Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey). Hopefully, Dempsey will star in Scream 7 and audiences can see where they are now. I like that fans got to see the two beginning to get to know each other in Scream 3. But fans missed a lot of their courtship and relationship, and more details should be included in the upcoming slasher sequel.
Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) are another important pair from the Scream franchise. They have great chemistry in the first movie and go through an emotional journey that includes falling in love, getting married, dealing with the stressors of everyday life, and then sadly getting divorced by the fifth movie. At the time of Dewey’s tragic death in Scream (2022), he and Gale are no longer together, but they still think and worry about each other a lot.
Another unforgettable couple is Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) in Scream. Stu is goofier than the tough, sarcastic, and wise-cracking Tatum, which makes them a bit of an odd couple. When I look back on these Scream couples, I’d say that Gale and Dewey were the best one, and that makes me sad all over again about his untimely passing.
