What Do You Need Water For in Caves of Qud?
Water is the essence of life in the real world, and that holds true in Caves of Qud. Water is one of the few things in the game that you can drink to ensure you don’t dehydrate and die, but it is also the main currency, regardless of what starting point you choose for Caves of Qud. In order to trade for items, you will mostly pay in drams of water, though you can trade items for other items. If you are amphibious, you will also need water to pour over your body to keep it hydrated. Liquids can also be diluted with the addition of water.
You will also need water for water rituals, which will most likely be an important part of interacting with NPCs. Most religions in the mysterious world of Caves of Qud use the water ritual as a kind of greeting/getting to know someone. Depending on where you are and who you are with, this can either raise or lower your reputation with the people and things around you.
Where to Find Water in Caves of Qud
While you can find water all over the place in Caves of Qud, 99% of it will be completely unusable. It will be salt water, which can’t be used for trading and also can’t be used to stay hydrated. So it’s a good idea to know where to find fresh water. The absolute best way to get some extra water when you first begin your Caves of Qud journey is to trade for it. Trading is also a great source of water late game as well. In order to trade for water, you need to be in a trade window, then select some things from your inventory to trade. If the amount that the other person owes you is more than the amount of stuff you will be getting from them, they will have to “pony up” the difference. Other ways you can get water are:
- Look for large pools of water that are a brighter white than normal salt water. These will be fresh water and drinkable.
- Look for puddles in underground locations like ruins. Most of these will be puddles of fresh water you can take if you stand next to the spot where the water is.
- One of the many towns in this open world game, called Kyakukya, has water storage for when you reach that point on the map.
- There is a fungus in the game called Weeps, and they weep liquids. You can find Wine Weeps, fresh Water Weeps, and other kinds of liquids. If you have an empty container, you can take that liquid with you.
- Use desalination pellets on salt water to get drinkable water in this modern game that plays like an old-school game.
- While not an actual source of water, there are some thirst-modifiers you can get from cooking with two main ingredients: pickles and vinewafer sheaf. Depending the recipe, you can get “You thirst at half rate,” a trigger for when you drink, or a buff so won’t get thirsty for 12 in-game hours.
