There is a lot of content to play through in Path of Exile, but is it worth it?

One quest that you can complete fairly early into the game is Treacherous Ground. This is a simple quest that tasks you with searching and defeating the Devourer in the Mud Burrow. If you are brand new to Path of Exile though, this fight can be tough. Thankfully, we’re here to help you come out victorious!

How To Accept Treacherous Ground

Accepting this quest is pretty straightforward. After making your way to the Clearfell Encampment for the first time, you can speak to the NPCs here, including Renly, who becomes important for a few different quests.

By speaking with him, you’ll be able to accept Treacherous Ground, which tasks you with finding the entrance to the Mud Borrow and defeating the Devourer. This is all there is to the quest; once you’ve defeated the Devourer, it will be done with.

How To Find The Mud Burrow Entrance In Clearfell

Your first step is to enter Clearfell, which can easily be reached from the north path in the Clearfell Encampment. From here, you’ll need to search for the entrance to the Mud Burrow. If you are brand new to Path of Exile, now is the time to learn that maps are randomly generated. You can visit an area one day, but the next day, can will look totally different.

This doesn’t apply to places like settlements/encampments, but for the most part, the layout of maps are randomly generated. As such, you’ll need to run around Clearfell until you find the entrance to the Mud Burrow.

Thankfully, the world map shows the Mud Burrow extending to the north of Clearfell. With this in mind, you can search the northern edge of the area. There will be a waypoint here as well, so once this is in sight, you’ll know that you are in the right place.

In Clearfell, you may come across the boss called Biera of the Rotten Pack. You don’t have to defeat this boss in order to complete this quest, so if you feel under-leveled to take her on, then you can just run by.

How To Find The Devourer

From here, you’ll need to navigate through the Mud Burrow in order to find the Devourer. The boss itself is in a large arena with a checkpoint right at the front, so if you die, you’ll just respawn here (during the boss fight).

Prior to reaching this area, there will be enemies that fill the tunnels of the Mud Burrow. For the most part, these are manageable; just attack the enemies as they come. At times, enemies may jump from the walls and attack; this can catch you off guard, so be sure to stay aware of your surroundings and dodge-roll away when necessary.

How To Defeat The Devourer

Firstly, if you are playing solo and haven’t done much farming, then this fight can be a bit difficult. Prior to heading into the arena, we suggest standing near the checkpoint and making sure skills/equipment are in order.

If you don’t have enough potions left, you can open a portal to town, stock up, and then hop back in the portal. While in town, consider browsing the wares of NPCs for better armor if necessary too.

The Devourer has a few main mechanics that you’ll need to keep in mind. Melee attacks are performed both with its arms and with its tail. You’ll be able to see the tail spin around and deal damage in a circular AoE. If you get too close to its arms, then it will reach out and deal damage. With the dodge roll, you can avoid both of these attacks.

In addition to these melee attacks, the Devourer will spray acid towards you, as well as directly on the ground. If you stand on these greenish areas, you’ll take damage (and your health orb will turn green).

With these melee and ranged attacks in mind, it’s important to keep moving during this battle. This goes for a lot of bosses in the game, but we suggest moving around to avoid standing in acid, as well as being targeted by the tail. The boss itself doesn’t do much moving after it’s appeared through a hole in the ground, so you can use your own AoE attacks to target them.

A player fighting bug adds from the Devourer.

During this fight, the Devourer will also summon bugs that will attack you. These bugs aren’t too difficult to defeat, but if you don’t deal with them, they can quickly overwhelm you. As such, skills that target multiple enemies (such as Spark) would be good to deal with these adds.

If you are really struggling at this point, we suggest kiting around to regain your bearing. This isn’t ideal, but if you have HP-replenishing equipment or cooldowns to wait through, you can run around the boss and it’s adds to get back on track.

How To Finish Treacherous Ground

After defeating the Devourer, grab its loot and head back to the Clearfell Encampment. From here, you can talk to Renly to finish up, get your reward, and then move on to the next quest!
