Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is one of the more anticipated video game adaptations of 2025, thanks to the first film’s solid box office performance. Whether the sequel can continue that trajectory remains to be seen, but producer Jason Blum has provided a promising update.
After almost twenty installments in the gaming franchise, Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s finally became a movie in 2023. The movie was a collaboration between Cawthon and Blumhouse Productions, and it took many years, multiple rewrites, and director changes to get off the ground. Five Nights at Freddy’s, which tells the story of a pizzeria haunted by murderous animatronics, hit theatres in 2023 with a cast led by Josh Hutcherson as the pizzeria’s new security guard and Matthew Lillard as the villain, William Afton. After Five Nights at Freddy’s smashed records for Blumhouse at the box office and became Peacock’s most-watched film title of all time a sequel was inevitable.

Five Nights at Freddy’s streamer Markiplier has commented on whether he might cameo in the movie sequel.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 went into development quickly following the first film’s release. This meant the film’s script needed to be turned around quickly, but Jason Blum provided insight into this in an interview with Den of Geek, revealing the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 script required a lot fewer drafts than the first version. “We worked very hard on the script for this movie. We didn’t have as many drafts of the script of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 as we did on [the first movie]. On that, we had about 14 different versions; on this, we had about four or five different versions,” he said. Cawthon, the creator of the game, was one of the writers on the first FNAF film and is also helping to pen the sequel. Blum’s confidence in the script and its lower number of drafts seemingly suggest a strong story for the sequel that fans can look forward to.

What is the Story of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2?
It’s still not entirely clear what story Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will adapt, but it will be a continuation of the first film with Hutcherson and Lillard both set to return. The first poster for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 also hinted at the appearance of a pivotal game character, Toy Freddy. Unlike the previous animatronics, the ‘Toy’ lineup of animatronics is more advanced. In the games, they are equipped with facial recognition technology to help them protect the children at the pizzeria from any harm. Toy Freddy and the other toy animatronics were introduced in the second Five Nights at Freddy’s game which does seem to suggest the second movie will draw from that story.
Along with the appearance of Toy Freddy, Hutcherson teased that the FNAF sequel would have higher stakes and be scarier than the first. The FNAF games are horror games aimed at a younger audience, and the film adaptation operated in similar territory, keeping the scares within the confines of a PG-13 rating.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is scheduled to release on December 5, 2025.
