Key Takeaways
- Famitsu readers voted on the Top 30 PlayStation games of all time, and Final Fantasy 7 earned the top spot.
- Other highlights include Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo and Resident Evil.
- There were a few surprises, including three Monster Hunter games and no PS5 titles to be found.
In case you missed it, PlayStation is celebrating its 30th anniversary. That is 30 years since the original PlayStation debuted in Japan on December 3, 1994. For its part, PlayStation has gone all out for the celebration, releasing a limited-edition PS1-themed PS5 Pro, along with some neat PlayStation-centric themes.
That said, the festivities aren’t just limited to PlayStation, as Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, polled its readers to find out what is the best PlayStation video game of all time. For background, roughly 4,000 people voted, and pollsters were not limited to PS exclusives or any one system, making the results span all of PlayStation’s storied history.

To no surprise, Final Fantasy 7 was voted as the No. 1 best PlayStation game of all time by readers. That said, the rest of the list is chock-full of some no-brainer titles like Metal Gear Solid 3 (No. 18), Crash Bandicoot (No. 27) and Resident Evil (No. 5), among others.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few shockers, especially what came in at No. 2.
Monster Hunter Rules All
There is not one, but two Monster Hunter games within the Top 10 of best PlayStation games of all time, and three in the top 15 alone. Indeed, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G was ranked as the No. 2 best PS game, with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd as No. 6 and Monster Hunter: World at No. 12.
It’s no secret that Monster Hunter is massively popular in Japan, but seeing two PSP games in the top 10 above the likes of MGS 3 and even Gran Turismo is still pretty noteworthy.
Oddly enough, only one PlayStation 3 title made the cut, with The Last of Us checking in at No. 29. That means no Uncharted, Resistance or Ratchet & Clank. Additionally, only one other PS4 title besides World was voted, as Ghost of Tsushima rounded out the list at No. 30.
The last noteworthy bit is the lack of PlayStation 5, as not one PS5 title made the list. Granted, the PS5 is still relatively young, but even then, it has had a few noteworthy releases, like Returnal, Demon’s Souls and even two Final Fantasy titles (Rebirth and 16). Given that PlayStation has shown no signs of stopping anytime soon, it’ll be interesting to see what gets chosen at its 35th and (gasp) 40th anniversaries.
