Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens is a series that is aimed more towards younger audiences, and as a result, Yuga, the protagonist, has a more basic and casual design compared to his counterparts. Still, since this is Yu-Gi-Oh!, he has a vibrant design, especially the bright red hoody and multicolored hair that help Yuga stand out from his series’ side characters.

Yuga’s bright green eyes are another highlight of his design which makes him instantly recognizable, but ultimately, he lacks the small extra details and features that have made the other protagonists so eye-catching. When watching Sevens though, Yuga’s appearance doesn’t matter too much, since his infectious charisma still makes him a fun character to follow.

The protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Jaden Yuki, opts for a slightly more casual style than his counterparts, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Jaden’s red popped collar school uniform has become synonymous with the character, along with his spiky brown hair which which was much more grounded compared to Yugi’s hairstyle that came before.

However, it does feel as though author Takahashi decided to hold back a little when designing Jaden. The reason for doing this was probably to make him more relatable, considering GX is based in a school and was aimed more towards younger viewers than the original series initially was.

At first glance, Yuma’s design can seem a little over the top, but there are a lot of small details here that both callback to the series’ roots, and highlight Yuma’s character traits. His red sleeveless jacket paired with the golden necklace almost feels like an image to Atem from the first series, but Yuga’s chaotic hairstyle and visor still help to make him look unique enough to be his own protagonist.

Additionally, it also presents him as being a duelist who is serious about winning, always having a piece of technology equipped to take down anyone who stands in his way. Another small but stylish feature is the studded bracelet Yuma wears around his right wrist, giving off a subtle punk-rock vibe.

5 Yuya Sakaki (Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V)

Yuya’s Design Gives Off The Impression That He’s An Experienced, Albeit Childish, Duelist

Yuya’s design is vibrant, eye-catching, and effortlessly stylish for someone his age. The most noticeable part of his look is his red and green hair which could have easily looked awful but manages to work thanks to how each section blends together. His goggles, which never leave his head, are a great small detail to show how childlike and adventurous Yuya is, which also relates to his lighthearted Performapal deck of monsters.

Yuya also decides to rock a long white cape that works well in presenting him as a fearsome duelist who is certainly dressed for the occasion. Speaking of dueling, Yuya may not be as strong as some of the others on this list, but his design most definitely deserves a lot of credit for how much it says about his character.

4 Yusaku Fujiki (Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains)

Despite looking like a fairly ordinary high school student on the surface, there’s something about Yusaku’s design that indicates there’s much more to this mysterious young man than meets the eye. The Yu-Gi-Oh! series is no stranger to weird and whacky hairstyles, but Yasku’s specifically is quite unique in how it contains small streaks of pink which almost look like bolts of lightning coursing through him.

The same can be said for his blazer, which features thick blue lines running around the edges. While these small details do add some vibrancy to an otherwise pretty standard attire, they also reference his Playmaker appearance, which he would use when engaging in duels against his enemies later in the series.

Yusei’s effortlessly stylish design almost makes him look like a fan of Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, especially the black coat and permanent scowl that rarely ever leaves his face. His more grounded design does suit the slightly more mature and darker tone of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, while still retaining an outlandish hairstyle that makes him a worthy member of the Yu-Gi-Oh! cast.

A few other extra details that say a lot about Yusei’s personality are his small brown gloves. Since Yusei grew up in Satellite, an impoverished area outside of the luxurious Domino City, the gloves, alongside his slightly roughed-up coat and face, show that he’s someone who has had to fight for everything he has, rather than being handed it on a silver platter.

The pompous blue and white hair, golden necklace, single shoulder pad, and bright white robe indicate that this is potentially a soldier who has been in his fair share of tough duels over the years, but in actuality, he is an alien who has landed on Earth to learn more about Rush Duels.

Once this is revealed, it begins to make a lot of sense why he looks so out of place, but it also perfectly emphasizes just how prestigious this otherworldly being is supposed to be among his own people. Yudias undoubtedly has one of the most eye-catching designs in the series; being full of intrigue and mystery.

It’s hard to argue against Yugi, and in turn, Atem’s design being one of the most iconic in all of anime. The absurdly cool red, black, and golden hair, paired with the free-flowing blue jacket and Millenium-Puzzle chain result in a character who looks like he was ripped straight out of the 90s, which is far from a bad thing.

Being two characters at the same time also meant that author Takahashi was able to get experimental with his facial features, opting for a more passive look for Yugi with big and wide eyes, while Atem appears more serious and stoic. Yugi and Atem’s striking design made Yu-Gi-Oh seem more like a cool and trendy hobby as opposed to a childish card game, which just goes to show how much of an impact character designs can truly have.
