You’ve completed the intro quests in Caves Of Qud – now what?

Two stats that you’ll come across are DV and AV. These represent your dodging and armor values, but they can seem very similar. In this guide, we are going to take a look at the difference between AV and DV, as well as what high levels in both of them do for you.

What Is AV?

AV is displayed as a blue diamond when looking at gear. For example, our painted carbide plate armor has a blue diamond with a five next to it. This means that the gear’s AV is five.

AV stands for Armor Value. This is essentially how much protection you have when being hit by an enemy. Rather than blocking attacks missing, high AV will decrease the amount of times that your enemy penetrates armor.

When an attack doesn’t penetrate armor, it won’t do damage, which means that your AV and armor successfully protected you.

What Is DV?

A player looking at their DV.

DV is displayed as an empty circle when looking at gear. For example, our painted carbide plate armor has a circle with a negative five next to it. This means that the gear’s DV is negative five, and that it decreases our chances to dodge.

DV stands for Dodge Value. This is how likely you will be hit by an attack. When DV is high, you’ll be able to dodge more attacks done by enemies. When the attacks do land, they will still deal damage.

The amount of damage dealt to you will be influenced by your armor, the enemy’s attack, and your AV.

Which Stat Is Better?

In general, AV is a bit better than DV. If you have high AV, you can avoid taking damage due to your armor even if you are still hit. DV doesn’t negate damage when hit; you’ll still lose HP if you don’t successfully dodge.

As a rule of thumb, you want good defense. With low AV and high DV, you have a higher chance of being one-shot by tough enemies in the world. AV is more reliable and won’t get you killed as often. Of course, you can also strive for high AV and DV in order to block and dodge attacks that come your way.

So overall, AV is a great thing to prioritize early in the game, but once you are strong and defensive enough, you can start focusing on raising your DV.
