Riot Games enters the TCG genre with Project K

The announcement came from Riot Games yesterday as the game developer is finally getting its own version of the physical TCG. Riot stated that Project K is made by a “small” development team within the company and is led by game director Dave Guskin and executive producer Chengran Chai.

The game will be initially launched in early 2025 in China but players will get access to a first taste of the card game at the TFT Macao Open. The great news for fans is that the global launch is in the works as Riot is looking for a publishing partner for the U.S. and other countries.

The new card game is not the physical version of Legends of Runeterra

Riot explained that the game won’t be directly related to the existing digital collectible card game. While it will inherit champion designs, lores, and arts, it will have its own competitive ecosystem, with both national and global tournaments.

Throughout the past few years, Riot Games has been looking to develop its own game ecosystem around the League of Legends universe. Aside from releasing the FPS title VALORANT, auto chess battler TFT, and mobile game Wild Rift, the company will be expanding to the fighting game genre with 2XKO, which is expected to launch next year.

And let’s not forget the League MMO is in the works, too. Together with the Netflix series Arcane having just releasing its second season, it’s a busy time but also exciting for Riot Games. While we wait for more details to be announced, fans can look forward to seeing a potential preview during the TFT Macao Open next week, Dec 13 to 15.
