How do you complete the Sacred Wounds puzzle in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle? This puzzle is the first major brainteaser you’ll encounter during the story. After Antonio gives you a bottle of wine, you head to a tower in the Vatican and pour its contents into a basin. Then, after rotating a stone circle 360 degrees, you’ll head down into the catacombs beneath the city. Here you’ll find one of the game’s trickiest puzzles.
If you’ve played any other major action-adventure games, or even seen the Indiana Jones movies, you’ll have a good understanding of how the puzzles in The Great Circle work. Before you can complete the primary Sacred Wounds puzzle, you’ll first have to explore the surrounding area and tick off smaller puzzles to gather the info you need.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Sacred Wounds puzzle solution
Once you’ve reached the catacombs at the bottom of the tower, you’ll spot a painting of Jesus with a basin in front of him. Pour the bottle of wine Antonio gave you into the bowl and five handles will come out of the main painting. You can then interact with them, but you won’t know what to do with the painting quite yet.
Head to the left of the main painting, take the bust off the ledge, and pour more wine into the bowl. The number two in Roman numerals will then appear in the bowl.
Next, head through the open gate to your left (careful, it will suddenly close behind you) and pour more wine into that bowl in front of another painting. The number two will appear in that bowl as well.
Then, since the gate is shut, head through the open wall to your left and follow the hall around and you’ll spot another basin and a painting. Pour wine into it and the number three will be revealed.
Now, grab the metal stick resting against the wall and smash the lighter-colored wall with it to break it open. You’ll be back in front of the main painting.
Then head to the right of the main painting to another basin. Pour wine in it to reveal a three at the bottom.
Now, turn right and you’ll see a closed metal gate. You need to squeeze through the gap in the wall on the right where you’ll find the final basin and painting there. One last time, pour wine into the bowl to reveal the number four. To get out, open the door behind you by pulling the chain.
Head back to the main room. It’s now time to interact with the main painting and pull the levers to complete the Sacred Wounds puzzle.
You can move each level to II, III, or IV, with each level relating to a part of Jesus’ body. You’ll notice that each of the nearby basins has a part of Jesus circled on the painting. Therefore, the solution is below.
Place the Sacred Wounds levers in the following positions:
- Right foot (right side of the painting, not Jesus’ right) – IV
- Left foot (left side of the painting, not Jesus’ left) – III
- Right hand – II
- Left hand – II
- Body – III
The levers will then retract and the painting will rotate, allowing you to head through to the next part of the mission.
It’s worth committing this puzzle to memory, as a similar challenge with a familiar solution will pop up later in the game as part of a side Fieldwork quest.
