How To Start The Counting Letters Mystery
You’ll find this mystery in the restricted area at East Wat Mahathat. You can get here by boat or by fast traveling to the East Wat Mahathat road sign. This is the area with the huge temple where you work with the locals to retrieve this region’s stone, but the mystery you’re looking for is in a large tent behind the temple to the left.
Getting around this area is much easier if you’ve already found the Royal Solider disguise in Voss’s camp.
To begin the quest, pick up the note on the table called Bartolomeo’s Challenge.
How To Solve The Counting Letters Mystery
As the Bartolomeo’s Challenge note explains, you’ll need to use the nearby Code Wheels, Code Tables, and Wheel Machine to decode Bartolomeo’s code: JHHS.
Your first task is to find the wheels with letters that match the code, but it’s not as simple as it first appears. Sort through the four Code Wheels on the ground and you’ll find one wheel with a J and an S, two wheels with an H, and one wheel that doesn’t have any of the letters you’re looking for.
The wheel that doesn’t have a J, H, or S on it is a red herring. Throw that one to the side and ignore it. The wheel with a J and an S on it will go in the first and fourth spot in the machine. You’ll put it in the first spot first, then after you record the letter, move it to the last spot and record its letter too.
As for the two wheels with an H, you’ll have to record their letter in both spots. The double letter means there are two possible solutions to this puzzle, but only one code will match the word on the code Table.
To begin, place the code wheel with a J in the first slot of the machine, then each of the wheels with an H in the second and third slot. Leave the fourth slot open for now. Close the lid on the machine and rotate the wheels until the top row reads “J H H”. The bottom row will read “B I E” or “B E I” depending on which H wheel is on which slot.
Next, open the machine and move the wheel from the first slot into the fourth slot. Then close the machine and rotate the fourth wheel until you see an S in the top row, revealing the bottom letter is an R. You know the code you’re looking for is either “BIER” or “BEIR”.
Now, pick up the Code Table on the clipboard and look for BIER or BEIR. You’ll quickly see that only one of them is on the list. BIER translates to the number 4134. Enter 4134 into the padlock on the chest and open it to complete this mystery.
