While exploring the Vatican in Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, you may come across a dig site that’s been taken over by the Blackshirts. The excavation is central to one of the area’s more involved side quests, which sees Indy help a pair of beleaguered British archeologists and get some more clues toward the game’s ultimate mystery.

How Many Times Does Indiana Jones Actually Use The Whip?
Indiana Jones relies on his whip to save the day, but how often does the action icon actually use it?
The quest, titled A Savage Discovery, involves a lot of stealth and some combat, making it more action-packed than the comparatively calm gameplay in the Vatican. If you aren’t sure where to go next in your search for the Stone Fragment, read on.
How To Start The Savage Discovery Mission
The first clue toward starting this quest chain is available as soon as you leave the Apostolic Library. Directly in front of the door that you leave by is a military tent; inside, you’ll find a document by the entrance that refers to a young archeologist arrested by the Blackshirts.
There’s also some cash to steal next to the document – just be sure nobody sees you take it. The tent is lightly guarded, but that doesn’t guarantee you won’t be caught.
Taking the letter unlocks the Savage Discovery Fieldwork chain. Your next stop is to find Professor Savage, the lead archeologist on the dig before the Blackshirts took over. It’s best to hold off on this step until you’ve acquired the camera, since reaching the Post Office and speaking to Ernesto causes several roadblocks to clear away.
Where Is Professor Savage?
The easiest way to find Savage is to leave Belvedere Courtyard by the western exit. Beware of the army captains with yellow hats in this area, as they can see through your priest disguise if you get too close to them. If you’re feeling brave, you can also sneak into the military tent on the west side by climbing into the truck parked nearby to get an Adventure Book on the desk inside.
If the tunnel doors are closed, you can push them open.
After leaving the Belvedere Courtyard, turn left and follow the road south to the Borgia Courtyards. Turn left again at the end of the road; you’ll see Professor Savage on the right, near a bulletin board in the next alley over.
How To Rescue Sidney
Professor Savage will ask you to rescue his apprentice Sidney, the arrested youth the letter in the tent was referring to. Go back to the Borgia Courtyards and follow the road north until you see a military checkpoint; Sidney is held in the barracks further north.
A captain is inspecting the troops to the left in front of the checkpoint; if he spots you, you’ll have a large group of enemies to deal with. In that case, it’s better to run away.
There are two ways into the barracks:
- Climb the scaffolding on the left to sneak into the guardhouse, then make your way across the grounds.
- Sneak past the captain to get behind the hedges across the street, then crawl under the wooden structure and emerge on the other side. If you go all the way to the far end, there is a trapdoor that leads straight into the bunkhouse where Sidney is held.
The former option is slower, but a bit safer as you’re less likely to be spotted by the captain. If you’re patient, you can lure guards into the guardhouse one at a time and eliminate them before moving on to the holding cell.
Inside The Barracks
The building at the rear of the barracks – the largest one – is where Sidney is being held. Rush the guard standing outside and knock him out quickly, then carry him inside before anyone notices.
There are two more guards in the entrance area, to the left; one by the window, and another one seated around the corner. You can easily get a stealth takedown on the one by the window, then use the whip to pull the other one toward you for a fast knockout.
Go upstairs and take out the two guards there. Don’t forget to open all the lockers and take any coins lying around on desks as you clear the building! There’s also a Medicine Bottle at the top of the stairs that you can turn in to Sister Valeria at the Pharmacy.
On the other side of the upstairs sleeping area you’ll find some bread; eat as much as you need to boost your health, heal up with bandages if needed, and grab a weapon. The smaller set of stairs leads to the holding cell, which is guarded by a heavy.
The heavy is seated such that sneaking up on him isn’t an option; instead, run toward him and hit him as hard as you can before he gets a chance to strike. Dodge his double-fisted smash attack at all costs.
Once the heavy is down, take the Jail Cell Key from the hook by the lamp in the corner and use it to unlock the door under the stairs. Sidney will make his own way back to Savage, while you can leave the way you came.
If you’ve found the Blackshirt Key, you can explore the tent across from the building’s main entrance before departing.

Indiana Jones has just as many friends as he does enemies, but who is the archeologist’s best sidekick?
How To Find Giuseppe
Sidney tells you that the Stone Fragment you’re looking for was taken by a Blackshirt named Giuseppe at the dig site. Return to Belvedere Courtyard and climb the scaffolding behind the giant propaganda poster at the southern end. You’ll need to use your whip.
At the top, wait for the guard on the left to sit on the railing, then push him over so that he doesn’t get suspicious when you continue climbing the scaffold. The climb leads to an open window that will get you into the Apostolic Palace.
Go through the doors on the left and take the stairs leading down in the next room over. Bypass the next set of stairs, instead going through the door across the hall. You’ll see some construction equipment; go outside to find the dig site.
There are a lot of Blackshirts here, but also a lot of melee weapons to use. Take your time and use stealth takedowns while making your way across the excavation.
Go to the work office (Ufficio Dei Lavoratori) on the far side of the site; inside, in the rear right corner, is a shift schedule that indicates Giuseppe is in Section F. After the cutscene, climb into the pit and enter the tunnel marked with the letter F.
Talking to Giuseppe will start a fight; Indy will drop any melee weapon he was carrying during the cutscene, so your best bet is to open with a whip attack then either pick up your weapon or just punch Giuseppe until he goes down. Once he’s beaten, take the Cellar Key he’s carrying.
How To Find The Stone Fragment
As it happens, the address engraved into the key – number 3, Via dei Pellegrini – is the basement of the Vatican Post Office. Return to the street east of Belvedere Courtyard and look for the stairs leading to the cellar entrance on the right side of the post office building.
Use the Cellar Key to unlock the door; the Stone Fragment is straight ahead, against the back wall. Taking it will cause a soldier to arrive, triggering another fight. Like before, a whip attack to either stun or grapple him will make this an easy battle.
How To Open The Locked Chest In The Post Office Cellar
Before you leave, check the soldier’s pockets. He has a note with a hint for the combination to the locked chest behind the shelves in the cellar you’re currently in. The hint is “November, last year.” Since the game takes place in 1937, the combination is 1136. Opening the chest gets you the Adventure Book for Street Scrapper, which increases your melee weapon damage.
Savage and Sidney are waiting on the first floor of the Apostolic Library, near the entrance. Return the Stone Fragment to them to complete the quest.
