Dwarf Fortress

A large elven caravan arrives at the thriving fortress of Joyoustoads in Dwarf Fortress.

The game that is compared to Caves of Qud the most is Dwarf Fortress. Back in 2002, Dwarf Fortress was available on PC for free using ASCII graphics giving it an appearance similar to Caves of Qud. Since then, it received a graphical overhaul and launched again in 2022 on Steam.

While Dwarf Fortress is more of a colony management game, it really has the same feel as Caves of Qud in terms of how complex the world around you is. Overall, you may end up surprised at how deep the world is; you only need to look at Steam reviews with 3,000 hours to learn this.

Rimworld

Ancient Domains Of Mystery is a roguelike game similar to Caves of Qud. Of course, you can venture through Qud on a safer game mode, but the real fun begins in the classic hardcore mode. Interestingly, this is another old game (1994!) that originally had ASCII graphics. The original version of the game looked more similar to Caves of Qud than this 2015 remaster.

In Ancient Domains Of Mystery, you’ll be able to get that classic roguelike RPG feeling. There is tons of content for you to complete, including crawling through dungeons that will inevitably lead to your demise.

Tales Of Maj’Eyal

Tales of Maj’Eyal is similar to the previous entry on our list. If you like making your way through tough dungeons in Caves of Qud, then Tales of Maj’Eyal is the game for you. Even if you are just a fan of roguelikes in general, this game is worth checking out.

Like Caves of Qud, it can be hard to get the hang of things here. Still, the game has incredible depth that will leave you playing for hours. Many players have compared it to a solo version of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign where you don’t have to worry about other party members. Oh yeah, this game also boasts a whopping 37 classes.

Fallout

The original Fallout is a post-apocalyptic adventure set in the ruins of the United States after a nuclear war. As a Vault Dweller, you are sent out into the wasteland to find a computer chip to repair the Vault’s failing water supply system, but the adventure quickly becomes much more than that.

Of course, death is around every corner. If you do happen to die, you can continue playing, but you may see your former zombie self wandering the world with your items. Much like Caves of Qud, Project Zomboid has been in early access for a very long time; maybe one day, it will see its 1.0 launch.

Moonring is an entirely free retro-inspired turn-based RPG with roguelike elements. Set in the hand-crafted world of Caldera, you are able to explore, quest, fight, or do whatever else your heart desires.

Like Caves of Qud, Moonring is defined by its exploration. You will begin your journey lost and with very little information about how to proceed, but as you piece things together the adventure only becomes more enjoyable.
