The 2025 release date for Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s highly anticipated post-apocalyptic horror, 28 Years Later, has been revealed, along with a brand-new brutal teaser poster. The long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later will kick off a fresh trilogy in the franchise, which will continue with new characters. The 2002 movie saw Cillian Murphy take on the role of Jim, a bicycle courier, who suddenly wakes up from a coma in the hospital to find out that the world he once knew had been overtaken by a highly contagious, and very aggressive, virus that has caused chaos within society.
28 Days Later co-writer, Alex Garland, has said that his writing for the 2002 film was inspired by George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead film series, as well as the 1951 book, The Day of the Triffids. This time, however, Garland previously mentioned in an interview that he ripped off another movie called Kes when writing the script for 28 Years Later. Kes is described as an authentic look at humanity, which focuses on a 15-year-old boy who has lost all hope in the world, so this will be an interesting incident for viewers to wrap their heads around in Garland and Boyle’s upcoming zombie film.

28 Years Later Poster And Release Date Unveiled
Sony has unleashed its very first poster for 28 Years Later, and it’s beautifully brutal. The poster embodies a sinister dark crimson background with a bright red biological hazard symbol which has been made with hundreds of tiny skulls. In an effort to make the movie’s first poster really stand out, it also includes the tagline “Time Didn’t Heal Anything,” giving an insight into what viewers will be welcomed with following the ending of 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes’ names grace the top of the poster, but there is no sign of Cillian Murphy, even though he has been confirmed to star in 28 Years Later. Charlie Hunnam has also been left off the poster, but maybe this is to keep fans in suspense even longer.
So far at least, Murphy returning as Jim seems to be the only character who is set to reprise their role from 28 Days Later. Imogen Poots, who played the role of Tammy in the sequel, and who had missed the Rage Virus due to being in Spain on a school trip, previously stated that she’d love the opportunity to revisit her character. Killing Eve and Alone in the Dark’s Jodie Comer, whose character in 28 Years Later hasn’t been disclosed yet, revealed that she had been watching clips of Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole to make sure she nailed the Newcastle accent for the film. Being the queen of taking on any dialect, it’s a pretty sure thing that Comer will not only smash the accent but also whatever character she’ll be jumping into the shoes of in the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror.
Hopefully, an official trailer for 28 Years Later will soon follow its first poster reveal, which will give fans a much clearer aspect of what awaits them. Thankfully, the poster unveiling did offer a confirmed release date of June 20, 2025. Even though 28 Years Later received some plot details early this year, this is great news for fans who have been waiting 17 years for the return of a new movie in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise.
