You just can’t keep a good hack and slash franchise down. In this case, a true titan of the genre seems to be as popular as ever after almost 30 years. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is already gathering steam, as over one million players have downloaded the demo so far, according to publisher Koei Tecmo.
Yes, one million. That’s a lot of people grabbing their sword, spear, or other weapon of choice to take on the hordes. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is very much inkeeping with what people expect from the action game series so far, and that seems to be exactly what the community wants.
As the title alludes, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is something of a prequel, in that it’s set in the first half of epic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as opposed to later in the story where other installments are drawn from. The fantasy game is expected to be more story-based as a result, though with plenty of mayhem all the while.
Really, the title is probably just some clever marketing to make the upcoming PC game feel like a fresh start to onboard new players. The first Dynasty Warriors came out in 1997, and this is now the tenth mainline entry, on top of a slew of spinoffs.
That can be interminable for newbies, even if the central thrust is always just picking a warrior you like and killing enemy soldiers, occasionally commanding your own for backup. Though I will say, Koei Tecmo had the chance to go for the awesome sounding Dynasty Warriors X and didn’t take it. Boo!
But I’m the one saying “Boo-urns” against a million other happy voices. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the first entry in seven years, and the demo is available on Steam now ahead of launch on January 17, 2025.
