Key Takeaways
- Quinn’s return in Dexter: Resurrection could bring a satisfying resolution to his suspicions about Dexter that were never fully explored.
- Fans are eager for legacy characters like Quinn to return, especially since his absence in New Blood was referenced in the final episode.
- Quinn’s confrontation with Dexter could make for a thrilling and long-overdue showdown that may not end well for the detective.
Dexter: Resurrection will begin filming next month, and it’ll follow on from the highly anticipated prequel/sequel series, Original Sin, which will air on December 13, 2024. Michael C. Hall will reprise the iconic role of Dexter Morgan in both series, and it’s highly likely he’ll be joined by more legacy characters in Resurrection. At the end of New Blood, Dexter’s dark passenger had been revealed to the world, and the sequel series will probably explore this in more depth. Detective Joey Quinn was always suspicious of Dexter, and nearly connected the dots that would have led to his capture, so his return would make things interesting.
After the Trinity Killer murdered Dexter’s wife, RIta, at the end of the fourth season of the original Dexter series, Joey Quinn began questioning who Dexter really was, and what he was hiding. As his relationship with Dexter’s sister, Debra, progressed, he backed off from exploring this particular line of inquiry. If Quinn was to return in Resurrection, he would surely piece everything together, and join Angel Batista in the hunt for their old colleague.

Joey Quinn was always a good detective in the Dexter series, but he never fully applied himself, which resulted in a lack of progression in Miami Metro Homicide. However, when it came to Dexter’s dark secret, it was Quinn who was the closest to figuring it out. In fact, he probably did actually know who Dexter really was, but for many reasons, he didn’t pursue it any further. Being in love with the serial killer’s sister, Debra, was the main reason he ignored his detective instincts. Fans have often questioned the legitimacy of Quinn supposedly not figuring out Dexter was a killer, especially after the mysterious death of Stan Liddy, the private investigator he hired to look into the forensic expert.
I’m glad he’s dead. Wish I could’ve done it myself.
It is a potential plot hole, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it came about because Quinn was a good character they wanted to keep around for longer. Bearing in mind, this all happened in the fifth season, and Dexter would run for another three seasons. Quinn would probably have been killed off if he found out what Dexter was getting up to in his spare time, in a similar fashion to James Doakes in the second season. In hindsight, it was a good decision, as it sets up a potential stand-off between Dexter and Quinn in Dexter: Resurrection.
Quinn Didn’t Appear In New Blood But His Character Was Mentioned And His Return Shouldn’t Be Ruled Out
Many fans were disappointed with the lack of legacy characters in New Blood, but it was understandable due to Dexter’s forced solitude after he faked his own death. However, at the end of the series, Angel Batista was on his way from the iconic location of Miami to confront Dexter in Iron Lake. For the eagle-eyed fans, there was a little nod to Joey Quinn in the form of an email exchange between him and Batista in the final episode. It was revealed Quinn was still a detective in Miami Metro Homicide, and he’d emailed Batista to ask him if he was going to Masuka’s bachelor party. Quinn is clearly still in the minds of the creative team, and it would be logical to bring him back in Resurrection. Maybe Batista will call on his old detective partner to join him in Iron Lake to come face to face with Dexter Morgan. It would be a long-gestating confrontation between Quinn and Dexter that fans would delight in.
It’s arguably just as important for Joey Quinn to confront Dexter, as he was the one who had serious concerns about him all those years ago. The death of Debra Morgan means Quinn will have no qualms about seeking retribution on Dexter. However, if Quinn does return, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he ended up on Dexter’s kill table, even if he doesn’t fit his once infallible code. Dexter has shown willingness to break Harry’s code in order to save himself, and he might have to do that again in Resurrection, with his secret finally out in the open, and law enforcement potentially on his tail if he escapes after recovering from his injuries.
