Best Skill Tree For The Hero In Dragon Quest 11

When you first start Dragon Quest 11, the skill trees available to the protagonist will be only partially available. As you progress through the game you’ll unlock additional skills in existing trees while also getting access to completely new trees altogether.

While you can respec whenever you want, knowing the right build early on and pursuing it will help you save a lot of gold in the long run. The Protagonist has access to either a one-handed sword or greatswords, here’s which weapon is best and which skill trees you need to invest in first.

Best Weapon For The Hero In Dragon Quest 11

While Greatswords have the higher attack, the best weapon choice for the protagonist is one-handed swords, or just, “Sword”. Early in the game, his off-hand can be used to hold a shield and further boost his defense, but the secret panel in the Sword tree gives him the ability to dual-wield. While the attack from your off-hand will be lowered to about half, the overall increase will out scale greatswords, especially toward the mid and late game.

By the end of the game, the Protagonist will also get access to two unique swords only he can use which can be dual-wielded, making him the best damage-dealer in the party. If you’re up against a difficult boss and need the hero to take on a supportive role, equipping a shield will greatly reduce his damage but make him one of the tankier options.

Best Skill Trees To Focus On For The Hero In Dragon Quest 11

Your first focus should be getting a few of the useful abilities from the Sword tree:

  • Metal Slash – Increase the odds of hitting and damage done to metal slimes.
  • Flame Slash – add fire affinity to your attacks and also deal more damage in general.
  • Miracle Slash – Heal the Hero based on how much damage was done.

There are also a few Strength-boosting panels found in the Sword tree that will help further increase his damage output early in the game and make him your best damage dealer for a while. The Luminary tree is okay at first, but will later become the best skill tree you have after it fully opens up. Right off the bat, you should get the first skill that increases your chances of getting Pep Up. Once the tree fully opens up, you’ll want to get the other Pep-Up boosts found in the bottom two corners.

Once the Luminary there fully opens up, there is also the charm boost, though it’s not really worth it so instead head down the right side of the tree to get the following healing spells:

  • Fullheal – Fully restore the HP of one party member.
  • Omniheal – Fully restores the HP of the full party (the best healing spell in the game).

While the Hero shouldn’t be a support, these healing spells can be a good backup in case your usual healer needs to do something else or is down. The Swordmastery Tree is best later in the game and will give you access to the Giga ability of whatever weapon you are using. While these are very powerful, spend points in the Luminary Tree first to set the stat foundation of your late-game character before getting the abilities that will drain all his MP.
