Asus has just hinted at a new ROG OLED gaming monitor in the works, which looks like it’s going to be a 27-inch model with a 4K resolution. Based on the company’s previous model numbers, it looks as though the new Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM will also have a 240Hz refresh rate, making it ideal for gamers wanting a high-resolution screen that won’t take over their desk.
OLED monitors now occupy several of the categories on our best gaming monitor guide, thanks to their high contrast, quick responsiveness, and great HDR reproduction. Most OLED monitors are based on 32-inch panels and larger, though, and the 27-inch models usually have a 2,560 x 1,440 refresh rate. If this new Asus monitor has the expected specs, then it could carve out a niche for itself.
Asus first hinted at the new monitor in an Instagram post that’s now been deleted, but which we saw before it was pulled down, and we can confirm that it was there. It’s also been preserved for posterity by TFT Central.
The video shows a cat paw on a keyboard pushing the ‘P’ key, which prompts a monitor to switch on, showing a message from “Boss” asking, “what’re we calling our newest monitor?” The reply from “Me” then auto-completes from the cat’s typing to “ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM.” Of course, in true cat style, it then nudges the mug off the desk with its paw.
That’s a very similar model name to the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM, which has a 4K Samsung QD-OLED panel and a 240Hz refresh rate, while the “32” refers to its 32-inch screen size. Based on this, it’s not outrageous to suggest that the new ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM will have a very similar spec, but with a 27-inch panel.
Another benefit of this 27-inch monitor over its 32-inch equivalent would also be its pixel density. A 4K 32-inch screen gives you a 137 PPI (pixels per inch) density, but this increases to around 163 PPI if you condense the same resolution into a smaller, 27-inch screen, resulting in a sharper image. A few places are referring to this tease as a “world first,” but Asus has already made a 27-inch 4K OLED screen in its ProArt range. However, this spec is a rarity in the gaming space right now.
We’re not expecting this new ROG monitor to be cheap, though. The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM currently goes for $999.99, and we expect the 27-inch equivalent to only snip a little off that price, assuming the specs are otherwise similar.
