Key Takeaways
- Earlier this month, it was suggested that Mortal Kombat 1’s third Kombat Pack had been cancelled.
- One insider has held out hope that isn’t true due to one of their sources hearing different things about KP3’s roster.
- That source has now corroborated the original claim about the DLC and development being finished – it’s over, folks.
A reliable Mortal Kombat 1 insider has “no hope left” for Kombat Pack 3 potentially still being in the works, as their third source has corroborated the recent cancellation reports.
As any Mortal Kombat fan is well aware of, Mortal Kombat 1 has had an incredibly rocky time since it launched. While the story mode and gameplay were considered some of the series’ best, the monetisation, game modes, and online features were all instantly rejected by fans who hated the live-service focus the series was headed in.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Review – Kool Kharacters Kan’t Save A Middling Story
Noob, Sektor, and Cyrax are great additions to Mortal Kombat 1, but they can’t save Khaos Reigns from being a disappointment.
Over time, NetherRealm Studios managed to claw back some goodwill with Mortal Kombat 1’s first and second Kombat Packs, which added characters like Homelander, Omni-Man, Noob Saibot, Takeda (the best of them all), and Ghostface. It seems Mortal Kombat 1’s redemption arc will soon be coming to an end, though.
Looks Like There’s No Hope For Kombat Pack 3
Despite Ed Boon previously claiming that Mortal Kombat 1 would be supported longer than any other NetherRealm Studios games, insiders reported that Kombat Pack 3 had been cancelled and that Mortal Kombat 1’s development was going to finish after the release of Kombat Pack 2’s final character, the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
This report was kickstarted by a few sources, including Redditor FateUnknown, who had a near-perfect track record of reporting Mortal Kombat leaks. One insider, Twitter user thethiny, has been holding out hope that the rumours weren’t true or falsified. When Kombat Pack 3 was said to be cancelled, thethiny said they believed it could be false information being shared with employees to find leakers.
The insider came to this conclusion due to one of their reliable sources being given a completely different list of Kombat Pack 3 characters than FateUnknown. This suggested that one of the leaks could be incorrect and that Warner Bros. was keeping an eye on who claimed which characters were coming.
That’s no longer the case, though. Over on Twitter, thethiny shared a chilling update that seemingly confirms Kombat Pack 3 isn’t happening, as their third reliable insider with a different Kombat Pack 3 list reached out and confirmed there’s no more content coming after T-1000. There is a possibility that NetherRealm gets to finish what they started, but it won’t be a full pack of characters.
And with that final bit of hope dashed out, it seems completely set in stone that Mortal Kombat 1’s development is officially ending after Kombat Pack 2. NetherRealm and Warner Bros. are yet to make a statement or confirm the news, but it’s only a matter of time until we hear from them about it all.
