Best Mutant Starting Builds in Caves of Qud

Gunwing mutant preset in Caves of Qud

For Mutants, we recommend going with the Preset Gunwing Calling. It’s basically a gunslinger that’s built for speed and maneuverability. The Gunwing starts with the following:

  • Beak: +1 Ego, +200 Bird Reputation
  • Heightened Quickness: +15 Quickness
  • Wings: You can fly (among other things)

Mental Mutations

  • Force Bubble – You can create a barrier around yourself.

  • Toughness: 18
  • Intelligence: 17

Starting Weapons

Starting Skills

Basically, Gunwing lets you shoot enemies down before they get too close. If they do reach your face, you either run or fly away, or use Force Bubble to absorb some hits. The downsides here are a low starting HP of 18, and a constant need for ammo early on.

Alternatively, we recommend any preset Mutant or a custom class with either Flaming Ray or Freezing Ray. These are free to cast, but they have a 10-round cooldown by default. Both these abilities can help you deal with most enemies early on, giving you a strong advantage against many low-level monsters.

Other notable starting Mutations include:


  • Double-Muscled: +2 Strength; 15% chance to daze enemies with melee attacks.
  • Multiple Arms: 10% chance for each extra arm to deliver an additional melee attack.
  • Multiple Legs: +20 move speed, +6% carry capacity.
  • Night Vision: You can see in the dark.
  • Regeneration: You regenerate HP more quickly, and you have a chance to regenerate lost limbs per round.

Best True Kin Starting Builds in Caves of Qud

Child of the Hearth preset in Caves of Qud

For True Kin, we recommend the Preset Child of the Hearth build. Unlike Gunwing, this is a melee starting class that lets you punch everything to death. By default, it can take out Snapjaws and Baboons in one hit, making the majority of early combat encounters trivial. Just be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. Starting Weapon

Get the Backswing skill from the Cudgel tree and spec into Dual Wielding. This gives you a chance to attack multiple times per turn, with a chance to stun enemies on hit. Put as many points into Strength as you can, and you’ll eventually be able to punch through most things in the game, including walls.

Alternatively, you can start as a Praetorian for a sword-and-board melee character who also happens to be armed with a long rifle. It’s a very balanced starting class reminiscent of warrior/paladin classes from classic CRPGs, and if you’re not particularly fond of trying out anything too fancy or specialized, then Praetorian should be perfect for you.
